SCB Bank question

Featured Replies

Does SCB do joint signatory account with Thai wife? Tried Bangkok Bank- no work permit, K bank- cannot open account as name wrong way round in passport! Already have Krungsri account with joint signatory but need another and they don't all do it. Can just go in and ask, but in my experience where we are many staff in all Banks are clueless apart from deposit and withdraw.

Well, I know somebody that has one so yes, they do, or at least did....they probably had this account for 20 years.

Can't you just open a second savings account with Krungsri? I have two savings accounts with one bank. Most banks have multiple savings account types. Some are passbook, some have higher interest, some have lower interest, some are eAccounts (online only). So just choose another one of their savings account products and open a second account. Most likely both accounts will also be linked to the same online banking. This also keeps it all simple by having everything with the same bank.

I do too at my bank. I honestly don't have much confidence in the govt guarantee scheme anyway. If things collapse here, I doubt the Thai govt would be able to bail out all the account holders.

Anyway, you could use this as a short term solution for now and then, in the future, if you're able to open an account at another bank, you could always shift things around later.

It seems like your options are either opening a second account with two signatories at Krungsri, or, if you really want to spread the risk across multiple banks, opening a single-signatory account elsewhere.

You might want to look into UOB. They offer savings accounts that let you name a beneficiary for free accidental life insurance coverage on the account. Your wife wouldn’t be a signatory on the account, but she could be named as the beneficiary. In the event of accidental death, she would receive around ten times the account balance, up to a maximum of ฿10 million.

Also, is there a particular reason she needs to be a signatory on all of your accounts? Is it mainly in case something happens to you? You could consider signing a power of attorney so she can act on the account if you become incapacitated. You could also create a Thai will to ensure she can access the accounts quickly if you pass away unexpectedly.

I had a joint account with my wife at SBC, opened about twenty years ago, without any problem.

But I had to close it because with a joint account it was not possible to use the app on the phone.
