Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt has initiated thorough safety inspections at all piers and floating platforms in preparation for the Loy Krathong Festival on November 5. This initiative aims to ensure public safety and minimize environmental harm during the festivities. District offices under the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration have been tasked with verifying the structural integrity of piers, installing safety railings, and displaying capacity limits clearly.

The governor has called on the public to use eco-friendly floats instead of those made from bread or fish food, which can lead to water pollution. Residents are encouraged to consider online krathong offerings as a more sustainable option. Additional safety precautions will be implemented in high-traffic areas such as under the Rama VIII Bridge, a popular spot during Loy Krathong. The use of firecrackers, fireworks, lanterns, and river cruises will be monitored as potential risks.

Loy Krathong is a beloved Thai festival celebrated with floats, or krathongs, launched on bodies of water to honor the water goddess and seek blessings. The event, falling on the full moon night of the 12th lunar month, combines spirituality and celebration, drawing locals and tourists alike. District offices have been asked to report on planned festivities and potential risks, emphasizing that safety and environmental issues must be prioritized.

Governor Chadchart has also expanded low-emission zones to all 50 districts of Bangkok in response to seasonal air pollution. Only vehicles meeting green standards will be permitted in these areas. In a bid to combat PM2.5 levels, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration is coordinating with Nakhon Nayok to address crop burning, a significant source of harmful dust particles. Moreover, the Department of Industrial Works has tightened factory emission standards, reducing the allowable smoke opacity from 30% to 20%.

Key Takeaways

  • Bangkok enhances safety checks at piers for Loy Krathong.
  • Eco-friendly krathongs and online offerings are encouraged.
  • Air pollution measures include expanded low-emission zones.
