Bangkok has ascended to the 33rd position in Kearney’s Global Cities Index (GCI) 2025, marking a significant leap due to robust business growth and enhanced digital infrastructure. This positions the city as a key player in the global arena, overcoming economic and political challenges. The city’s ongoing rise from 45th in 2024 demonstrates its resilience and competitiveness in the face of global uncertainties.

Last year, Bangkok made a notable jump from 34th, reflecting its status as the fastest climber among the top 50 global cities. Kearney attributes this progress mainly to increased business activity, with a rise of seven places in that category alone. Critical factors include the city’s performance in international business meetings and market developments, supported by regional trade growth.

As part of the index, cities are evaluated on business activity, human capital, information exchange, cultural experience, and political engagement. Bangkok has made significant strides in digital readiness, moving from 78th to 55th in data center investments. This growth highlights substantial investments in digital infrastructure, positioning the city as a digitally advanced global hub.

Kearney Thailand's Partner, David Uhlenbrock, emphasized the city’s potential in human capital development, driven by the Thai government’s focus on investing in talent and regulatory advancement. Despite maintaining its 105th position in the Global Cities Outlook, Bangkok’s future growth relies on enhanced innovation, environmental sustainability, and social equality.

Looking forward, Bangkok aims to further capitalize on AI and data-driven opportunities. To improve its global city ranking, the city should focus on strengthening these areas to unlock its potential further. The top ten global cities in 2025, including New York, London, and Paris, set the benchmark for Bangkok to aspire toward.

Key Takeaways

  • Bangkok rises to 33rd place in the Global Cities Index, driven by business activity and digital growth.
  • Significant investments in digital infrastructure have helped Bangkok move up the rankings.
  • Future efforts should focus on innovation, sustainability, and equality to improve further.

BKK is one of my favorite cities in the world and I have travelled close to 75 countries and have seen a lot cities. But I looked up the list and found the results odd. Los Angeles (I grew up there) and Chicago in the top 10?   Laughable.
