Xiaomi phones, anyone using them ?

Well yeah.  For anyone who is really security conscious, buying a phone or tablet which can be rooted and flashed with Graphene OS or other custom open-source ROMs is a good idea.  That goes if you are distrustful of China or the EU or your home country or any intermediary who can inject backdoors into your OS and applications.

Modifying the os on a device isn’t going to solve the backdoor exploits that are embedded in the hardware such as the EPROMs that China likes to tinker with.

Unless you're cool with giving all of your personal data and communications to Beijing, you're an idiot if you use any Chinese branded phone or computer.

Like Googles Android doesn't hoover up all of your personal data.  And a lot of you're applications.

One thing that Isreal just proved.  If a government entity wants to compromise your phone, its going to be compromised even at the hardware layer.  If you buy a phone made in the West I'd posit that you're equally an idiot as Western countries are as interested, if not more (like the EU) of "giving all of your personal data and communications to <enter name of country here>.  Its just a fact of life - "Smartphones" open you up to data collection.  If you are that worried, then stick with one of these.

Avoiding a direct question?  Every leftists on these threads are the same.

Be offended.  I’m glad you are.  Mission Accomplished.

I bought a 14 pro this year and am happy with it except for the way wifi calling seems so limited. The wifi calling feature is hidden and I had to dial *#*#869434#*#* to enable wifi calling. I have to use that dial code each time I change SIMs or upgrade the operating system. When it is enabled I can't select the SIM on which I want to use wifi calling. I have to remove my Thai SIM and only have the one SIM in the phone that needs wifi calling to use this feature. I don't have that issue on my old samsung where wifi calling is configurable by sim.

I use Gemini & chatgpt for difficult words to be translated.

Android Auto, I don't know, but it can be downloaded.

It's a really nice phone, very smooth, not much bloatware, 12Gb ram/500 storage.

Definitely recommend it.👍

thanks for the info, will take a look at it or maybe the 17 Pro, the 17 is priced around 32K but the seller just told me it's a chinese model with only 2 languages (English & Chinese) and with a chinese play store, I am skeptical thus decided to ask you, again thanks for the feed back

Latest is that a Global license has been applied for the 17 ( but not Pro or Pro Max ) and that a 17 Ultra is likely.

What I since learned is that EU regulations require a battery of around 5800 mah max but this can be overridden by paying some tax.

OPPO retains their 7500 mah battery for the Global rom edition of the Find X9 by greasing a few palms while Vivo chose to reduce their battery from 7500 mah to 5800 mah for the Global eu edition for their recent X300 Pro phone.

I would like to move to Grahene OS however future Android restrictions are going to be 'interesting'....

Do you know if banking apps work without huge workarounds or not?

The future restrictions on app devs hve no impact (according to graphene). Theres also plans for a deidicated GrapheneOS phone in 26/27.

I don't have time to find it now but there's a website that list which bank apps do work on GrapheneOS. I remember a couple of thai ones. I have used xiaomi eu rom in the past. Mostly without issue.  Occasionally they would throw a warning saying they detect magisk but only occasionally.

So, it appears that while the Xiaomi 17 Pro and Pro Max will sell, albeit in the Chinese rom versions only, the real focus ( no pun intended ) is on competing with OPPO and VIVO for the best cameras.

200 mp phones have been around for a while but now the latest fad is to add telephoto accessories to really boost that zoom.

Xiaomi 17 Ultra will likely be released either later this year or early next year and a Global rom release is almost guaranteed, competing against OPPO and VIVO in the camera department but also competing against the soon to be released Samsung s26.

Seems like Apple are going to be left behind !!

Have you bought a new phone yet, Andrew?

Yeah, went with the iPhone 17 base model.

Got 500 baht off for being a True user.

Was the easy option I admit, worried I would not get used to the Android system, been 14 years since i had anything other than an iPhone.

Was attracted by the Xiaomi 17 Pro and Pro max but too much fiddling around to get the Chinese Rom to work and still no eSIM or Android Auto so decided to abandon it.A lot cheaper ( 35k v 43k ) compared to IPhone 17 pro and pro max with similar specs and the gimmicky rear screen also but even so.

Android Auto was a big reason also, currently use CarPlay for all my music on my iPhone and it is so easy.

Tried my iPod touch 6 but that wouldn’t connect ( actually would connect but very limited functions ) and when that failed decided that the Xiaomi Pro/Max wasn’t for me.

Once that was out of the way decided to stick with iPhone, i know there is a lot of great phones out equal or better than iPhone but it really was the easiest option for me.

The Xiaomi 17 Ultra is due to appear before the end of the year and 99% likely to be released globally.

Will no doubt be a phenomenal phone but probably more than I would be willing to spend.

yeah i have used many Xiaomi phones, it is cheapest in case of its specifications and therefore they are the best. I have eagery used Poco X3 pro to use apps like HappyMOD, PUBG, Vidmate. It gives 60fps on PUBG where in this price, no other mobile is giving. But the bad point is that its hardware quality is not too high

But still for your usage, I recommend you to use these ones.
