Authorities in Chiang Rai have seized approximately 4.8 million methamphetamine pills, hidden in a Nissan pickup truck, after the driver fled by jumping into the Mekong River. The incident occurred in Chiang Saen district on the night of 23 October, prompting an ongoing investigation to track down the suspect. The haul, weighing around 536 kilograms, represents one of the largest drug seizures in the region this year.

The operation involved a coordinated effort between Chiang Saen police, local administrative officials, the military, marine police and other security units. Authorities received intelligence from an informant indicating that drugs were being transported from Myanmar into Thailand. Officers intercepted the vehicle near the boreder, but the driver attempted to evade capture, eventually causing him to lose control after a tyre burst.

Upon inspection, officers found 20 sacks of methamphetamine hidden in the truck’s rear and under its seats. The vehicle had no licence plates. Officials described the suspect as a tall, slim man who fled on foot before jumping into the Mekong to escape.

The seizure highlights ongoing challenges in controlling cross-border drug trafficking in northern Thailand. Security forces stressed that operations like this are crucial for disrupting organised criminal networks operating along the Myanmar–Thailand border. Experts note that such large-scale hauls often indicate the involvement of international trafficking groups.

Investigators are now examining the evidence and coordinating with other agencies to identify and apprehend the suspect. The recovered drugs have been secured as evidence and transferred to Chiang Saen police for further investigation. Authorities continue to urge anyone with information on the fugitive to come forward.
