November 1, 2025Nov 1 4 minutes ago, Cameroni said: Yes, you would be. Everyone who lives in Thailand is exploiting the poverty of Thais. Why do you think there are so many places to eat for 60 baht? Because Thais have to do that business to survive due to poverty and no decent jobs. All the services, all the benefits of Thailand, the whole reason why Thailand is a paradise, is all because of poverty. So everyone who lives in Thailand is exploiting this poverty. Not just the mum who's negotiation with her cleaner to get her down to 700 baht, also the guy who hires the gardener for 700 baht. The only reason Thailand is such a paradise is the poverty, which enables foreigners to exploit the locals. It's not just sexpats it's everyone. Not all expats are exploiting by taking advantage of lower prices, although much does happen. The expats living here are taking care of wives, girlfriends and children, plus adding more money on average every month than the locals. The reason prices are low is because it's a poor country, most not being able to afford any more as many don't get a pension when they hit 60. No welfare or food help besides the occasional few baht they receive. Free health care (mostly) is something that's necessary for the same reasons. Thailand is a paradise for those who live in the beach areas, for obvious reasons, and those that live in the country for those who like a quiet life with a (usually) younger wife. Otherwise it's the same as any other poor country where some move , mostly for the women, but a few for the country life, quiet and peaceful, just like country areas in all countries. It's not really exploitation as most of that is done by the higher up locals here. If you take prostitution out of the equation, many expats wouldn't be here, especially the tourists, and that tourism is where most exploitation takes place.

November 1, 2025Nov 1 To be honest, I cannot think of a single valid reason for a single man to move to Cambodia.

No, you're pretending that you're "supporting" people when you buy your lunch for 60 baht, get a gardener for 700 baht, a maid for 700 baht or a massage for 500 baht. It's still exploitation. Everyone who is living in Thailand is exploiting the poverty of Thais, including Thais themselves of course.

It just doesn't happen. Everyone exploits the poverty of Thais who lives in Thailand, including Thais, true, but expats too. Just the illegal business owners, those who rent out accommodations, taxi services, not paying employees enough, and outside foreigners buying up real estate and charging more. Most of this involves local corruption of some sort. The expats living here aren't exploiting by paying the same prices locals do for anything. The low prices are there for Thais mainly, but foreigners have been paying the same prices for decades, besides being over charged for attractions.

Just because the locals do it too doesn't mean it's not exploitation. It is.

I don't exploit anyone, it's supply & demand, a very 'free market' here in TH. They offer, I buy, and can't even remember the last time I haggled for anything. That would be exploiting if already the market price. And we pay above minimum wage for unskilled laborer at the house. Have to, or they won't come to work. That supply & demand thingy again.

And according to the income you made from your country it would seem a fair price. It's what a Thai massage costs there.

You have to go to Angkor. Dont go at solstice. Dont go on a weekend. Dont pay attention to touts. If you are really into learning, get one of the OFFICIAL guides (Brown shirts with a shoulder patch). Say no to photogs. Read a guidebook first. Ta Phrom is very touristy because of Tomb raider. Never go on a weekend. All the other temples, save Bayon, are never very crowded. Avoid weekends and Khmer holidays. Dont let monkeys steal your stuff

As if a Thai woman who sells fruit for 20 baht were free to offer the fruit at an alternative price, because Thais offer their services and products at extremely low prices as they are in desperate need for money due to poverty. It's not free supply, poor Thais are forced to offer their serevices and products at these extremely low prices due to the prevailing conditions of poverty.
