Two Thai women were arrested at the Nong Khai Customs checkpoint after allegedly smuggling 20 kilograms of heroin into Thailand from Laos. The arrests took place on November 3, 2025, when military and customs officers intercepted two separate vehicles believed to be part of the same drug trafficking network. Both suspects were travelling in private taxis from Laos and were stopped near the First Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge in Nong Khai Province.

The operation was led by the Second Army Region, acting under the Border Narcotics Suppression and Control Command, in coordination with the Surasak Montri Task Force and Customs officers. The first suspect, identified as Ms. Rueangrong, a resident of Bo Rai District in Trat Province, was found carrying approximately 10 kilograms of heroin concealed in two suitcases. A short time later, officials arrested another woman, Ms. Ariya, from Pak Kret District in Nonthaburi Province, with an additional 10 kilograms of heroin hidden in two similar suitcases.

Investigators believe both women were part of the same trafficking group but had separated during their journey to disguise the operation and avoid detection. The heroin, classified as a Category 1 narcotic, was packed and concealed to appear as regular luggage. The two suspects reportedly entered Thailand by taxi, using vehicles registered in Nong Khai, in an apparent attempt to look like ordinary travellers.

Authorities stated that the arrests highlight ongoing efforts to disrupt cross-border drug trafficking along the Thai–Lao frontier, a known route for smuggling heroin and other narcotics into northeastern Thailand. The operation was part of a broader campaign by the Second Army Region to intercept illicit drugs, precursor chemicals and related contraband moving through the area.

Both suspects, along with the seized heroin, were handed over to investigators at Mueang Nong Khai Police Station for legal proceedings. Police are now tracing the source of the narcotics and any links to larger trafficking networks operating in the region. Further investigations are underway to determine whether the women were couriers or directly involved in drug distribution.

Had they simply planted a tracking device in the cases and allowed them to continue they would not have need to suspect a drug network - they could have arrested them

Instead they arrested the equivalent of the mailman - a mule.
