Two foreign men have drowned in separate incidents off Nai Thon Beach in Phuket, where dangerous surf and powerful currents have created deadly swimming conditions. The victims, a 31-year-old Russian and a 22-year-old Myanmar national, lost their lives within hours of each other despite clear red flag warnings advising against entering the sea.

The first victim, identified as Dmitrii Zakutskii from Russia, was reported missing on Monday, November 3, after witnesses saw him pulled under by a strong wave and fail to resurface. Emergency services were alerted at around 10.15, prompting a search effort involving lifeguards, the Sakhu Subdistrict Administration rescue unit, and the Kusoldharm Phuket Foundation. The search continued into the following day, November 4, with support from the Thalang District Office, Sakhu village headmanand Bang Tao lifeguards. Jet skis were used to comb the waters before Zakutskii’s body was recovered at approximately 17:00.

Just hours later, another fatal drowning occurred on the same beach. A 22-year-old Myanmar national, identified as Kyaw Soe Naing, was pulled from the surf around 14.30. Rescuers performed CPR and rushed him to Thalang Hospital, but he was later pronounced dead. Both incidents happened on the same stretch of coastline, prompting renewed warnings from officials about the dangers of swimming during Phuket’s monsoon season.

Authorities have urged residents and tourists to strictly observe red flag warnings, which signal hazardous sea conditions caused by strong waves and rip currents. “Please don’t underestimate the sea. Even experienced swimmers can get into serious trouble under these conditions,” officials cautioned. These latest deaths have heightened concern among emergency services about ongoing beach safety, following a series of recent drowning cases.

As monsoon conditions continue, lifeguards and local authorities are expected to increase patrols and reinforce public awareness campaigns urging beachgoers to stay out of the water when warning flags are displayed. Officials emphasise that compliance with safety signals remains critical to preventing further loss of life along Phuket’s coastline.
