Thailand’s Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn confirmed that the long-delayed Phuket Tunnel project will proceed, reassuring residents and business leaders after recent public backlash over changes to the project. Following confusion, the minister issued multiple statements through Phuket’s Public Relations Department, emphasizing the government’s commitment to this long-awaited infrastructure development.

The project faced criticism due to unexpected design changes and management adjustments, leading the ministry to release at least four announcements within two hours. These modifications include narrowing the tunnel from 17 to 10 meters and removing the proposed toll fee, which stirred concerns regarding safety, particularly about motorbike access. Phiphat assured that despite these changes, the tunnel remains on schedule.

The revised plans involve the Kathu–Patong tunnel, anticipated to be toll-free, though the second phase involving a 30.6-kilometer elevated expressway might still include tolls. This highway links Muang Mai, Koh Kaew, and Kathu, offering motorists an alternative route. The broader Phuket Expressway Project, which the tunnel is part of, is divided into two phases. Phase 1 covers the 3.98-kilometer Kathu–Patong stretch with the tunnel; Phase 2 comprises the elevated road extending from Phuket Airport to Kathu.

Previously, under former Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob, a feasibility study and Environmental Impact Assessment were completed in 2022. These assessments aim to address traffic congestion and enhance safety on Phuket’s busiest routes. The tunnel project is currently in the procurement phase, with bidding anticipated by 2026 and construction set to commence next year.

Phiphat reiterated the commitment to the project, aligning with Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul’s directive to improve travel ease and safety. He assured Phuket’s residents that the project will not face delays, reinforcing the government’s dedication to advancing the region’s transport infrastructure.

Key Takeaways
