An MP from Ubon Ratchathani has launched an urgent effort to build a strategic road along the Thai-Cambodian border to support military movements after a series of landmine incidents. The move follows the latest case in Huai Tamarin, Si Sa Ket, where a Thai soldier lost a foot, becoming the seventh casualty in the area. Tensions along the border have risen again, prompting immediate action.

On 15 November, Somsak Boonprachom, known as “MP Xiang”, from the Thai Ruam Phalang Party, brought workers and local residents to accelerate concrete laying on the route. Only 150 metres have been completed so far, with several kilometres still required. He said he no longer trusts the security situation and wants the route finished as quickly as possible.

The road aims to provide a direct connection to a key strategic point that currently requires troops to travel by foot for nearly two hours. If completed, the journey could be reduced to less than 20 minutes. MP Xiang stressed that delays could hinder soldiers entering or leaving operational bases.

He added that he had not initially set a target distance for the project, intending simply to extend the road gradually. However, due to the heightened risk, he now plans to complete the first essential section within three days to support troop mobility. Funding comes from his own salary and donations from monks at various temples.

Naewna reported that the road is viewed as a critical strategic asset for Thailand. Officials expect that once the connection is operational, it will significantly improve the delivery of supplies and reinforcement capabilities in the border zone. The project continues under urgent conditions as tensions remain high.

Key Takeaways

• MP Xiang is funding and leading rapid construction of a strategic border road after rising tensions from landmine incidents.

• The project aims to cut troop travel time from nearly two hours to under 20 minutes.

• Construction is being accelerated with hopes of completing the first phase within three days.

It also provides any enemy who wants to attack a clear and decisive target. No more hiking through the jungle to see if you can spot the enemy.. just go to that new road hmm.
