Tourist police have arrested five Chinese nationals at a hotel in Chiang Rai after they allegedly entered Thailand illegally from Myanmar. The operation took place on 25 November 2025 following reports that a group of foreign nationals had checked into a hotel on Sanam Keela Klang Road in Rob Wiang, Mueang Chiang Rai district. The arrests led to immediate legal action, with all five suspects transferred to police investigators for further proceedings.

The incident began when Pol. Maj. Gen. Olan Ieamprapas, Commander of the Tourism Police Division 2, received information about the group’s presence at the hotel. He instructed Pol. Lt. Col. Thanawin Puangmali of Subdivision 2, Division 2 of the Tourism Police to conduct a surveillance operation at the location. Officers observed five men believed to be Chinese nationals eating near the hotel before returning to rooms numbered 4 and 5.

Police then identified themselves and carried out a check, confirming the presence of five suspects: Mr. Zhang, aged 30; Mr. Long, aged 29; Mr. Wu, aged 25; another Mr. Zhang, aged 28; and Mr. Lu, aged 28, all holding Chinese nationality. When asked to present identification, none of the men were able to provide any documentation to authorities. This prompted officers to detain them for questioning.

During interrogation, the suspects admitted they had illegally entered Thailand from Myawaddy in Myanmar. They said they crossed into Mae Sot district in Tak province via an unregulated natural route before travelling onward to Chiang Rai. They told officers they had left Myanmar because of an ongoing crackdown on scammer networks in that country.

The group further stated that their intention was to continue travelling from Chiang Rai to the Lao People’s Democratic Republic. Police determined that the men had neither permission to enter nor remain in Thailand. As a result, officers formally notified them of the charge of “being foreign nationals entering and staying in the Kingdom without permission.”

Authorities transferred all five suspects to Mueang Chiang Rai Police Station for legal processing in accordance with immigration law. The case underscores continued monitoring of foreign movements across Thailand’s northern borders, particularly in areas linked to irregular crossings. Police have not disclosed any additional information regarding possible further investigations or whether the suspects have links to criminal activities beyond illegal entry.

Naewna reported that officials are expected to follow standard legal procedures, which may include prosecution, detention and eventual deportation, depending on the outcome of the investigation. No further updates on their status or travel history beyond the initial admission were provided at the time of the report. Police have indicated that immigration enforcement will continue as part of broader border security measures.
