The Ministry of Transport has launched a campaign to reduce PM2.5 pollution in Bangkok, urging buses and trucks to register on the "Green List" to support the city's Low Emission Zone (LEZ) initiative. Deputy Transport Minister Mallika Jiraphanwanich announced new measures aimed at combating air pollution, focusing on particulates 2.5 microns or smaller. This move is part of a broader policy to enhance public health and quality of life in the city.

Promoting a transition to cleaner vehicles, the initiative advocates for replacing older buses with Euro 5 engines or electric buses to cut black smoke and PM2.5 emissions. The Department of Land Transport (DLT) has been tasked with enforcing stricter emissions regulations on a national scale, aligning with Bangkok's efforts to limit high-pollution vehicles in crucial zones. Vehicle operators are encouraged to join the "Green List" program by maintaining their vehicles through regular oil changes and air filter replacements.

Sorapong Paitoonphong, DLT director-general, stated that efforts to curb PM2.5 include tax incentives for adopting electric vehicles (EVs), roadside smoke inspections, and collaboration with Bangkok authorities on inspecting vehicle centers. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration plans to implement LEZs in all 50 districts, restricting entry of certain buses and trucks during high pollution times unless they meet specific emission standards or are on the Green List.

Operators are advised to adhere to proper maintenance protocols, such as changing oil and air filters and cleaning air systems, to enhance vehicle performance and reduce emission impacts. Registration for the Green List is available through a QR code or online at https://lez.bangkok.go.th, with the deadline on March 31 of the following year. DLT assures ongoing nationwide enforcement with inspectors to monitor truck and bus emissions as part of an integrated policy response to PM2.5 pollution, reported Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways

  • The Ministry of Transport is promoting cleaner vehicles to reduce PM2.5 pollution.
  • LEZs will be established in all 50 districts of Bangkok.
  • Vehicle operators are encouraged to join the "Green List" for better emissions compliance.

What about stopping the burning up north?

They absolutely need to get rid of those stinking older buses that pollute so badly. Many of them must be decades old but they still get them out every day to fill the air with their stinking smoke. I'm not holding my breath (pun intended) that there won't be some corruption though as they transfer to EV's (https://www.electrive.com/2025/02/27/thailand-to-deploy-1520-electric-buses-in-bangkok-by-2026/).

Does anyone remember the 489 natural gas buses at the centre of an alleged false tax report back in 2017? They are all still sitting somewhere in limbo whilst that mess gets sorted. Watch what happens with 'plans to lease 1,520 electric buses with a budget of 15,355 million baht'. Just ripe for some back-handers.

Yes,

But, it states that these are just plans and advice. So what can we expect.

Ecouragement to register!

Talk and no positive action.

"Encouraging", why Thailand in some ways offers more freedom than many other places. (And in a few less)
