Rachel Reeves Faces Resignation Calls Over Budget Deception

Chancellor Rachel Reeves is under scrutiny after the fiscal watchdog revealed she was informed months ago of a surplus, contradicting her public warnings of a deficit. Despite this, Reeves proceeded with a Budget that included significant tax hikes, citing economic challenges and suggesting potential income tax increases. Critics, including Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, accuse her of misleading the public to justify welfare spending.

The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) disclosed that it informed Reeves in September of a financial surplus, yet she continued to suggest a bleak economic outlook. This revelation has led to calls from political figures, such as Shadow Chancellor Sir Mel Stride and Reform UK’s Richard Tice, for her resignation. The public perception of the Budget is largely negative, with only 21% considering it fair.

Reeves’ handling of the situation has sparked outrage, with accusations of deliberately misleading the markets and public. Julian Jessop of the Institute of Economic Affairs labeled her actions as deceitful, claiming the drawn-out uncertainty damaged the economy. Despite these criticisms, Downing Street and the Treasury maintain that Reeves acted transparently and that her Budget decisions aimed to address national challenges.

Key Takeaways

  • Reeves accused of misleading public with false deficit claims.
  • Political and public backlash prompts calls for her resignation.
  • Government defends Budget as necessary for addressing economic challenges.

"of misleading the public to justify welfare spending."

So in other words lying? A politician who lies, I'm shocked!:cheesy:

It really is a nonsense!  When have politicians ever told the truth?  People have short memories of the Johnson years.

They can huff and puff all they like - Labour has nearly 2/3 of all seats in Parliament. A massive majority - much to the Daily Mail's chagrin.

Lying to Parliament.

She must resign.

It's that simple.

Is it claimed that she lied to parliament? I thought she's being accused of lying in her pre-budget interviews.

Budget 2025: Treasury Minister swelters in Camilla Tominey grilling as Labour MP insists Rachel Reeves did NOT lie about black hole

We all knew the 20 Billion was a lie. That's why she couldn't produce any proof when requested. I said it was a lie on here at the time.

It was designed to get money to pay off the rail workers, the doctors and the welfare state.

Whataboutism at its finest.

Blame the Tories. Just like Reeves did with this 20 Billion pound lie to justify taxing people to pay for the payoff of her mates in the public sector.

What a revolting group of liars this Labour government is proving to be. 🤮

So true, but only until the next election as the public have realised they've been had.

She lied, as did Starmer. We all know that already.

And then another catastrophic mistake will be made when protest votes are parked with Reform, splitting votes and/or delivering  MPs just as incompetent as Labour to Parliament.  The Tories  failed the nation and the Liberal Democrats have failed to rise to the challenge. If the Liberal Democrats could get themselves organized and sorted, they have a shot at becoming government.

If Reeves told a barefaced lie in parliament, and at the dispatch box no less........where is Badenoch?

She is not one to shy away from calling this out?

450,000 children lifted out of poverty while the markets respond positively to the budget.

Job’s a good’un.
