A Chinese man suffered serious injuries after stepping on a landmine while attempting to illegally cross the Thai-Cambodian border early on 29 November 2025. The explosion occurred around 05.50 in a scrub forest near an uncleared minefield at Ban Nong Chan in Sa Kaeo province. Border officials responded quickly, coordinating drone surveillance and dispatching a humanitarian de-mining unit to reach the victim.

Officers from the Border Patrol Police Company 4 reported hearing a loud explosion from the direction of an area known to contain unremoved landmines laid by Cambodia. The unit immediately informed their commander, who escalated the incident to the commander of Task Force 12. Approval was granted for the Humanitarian Mine Action Unit 1 (NPT.1) to enter the hazardous zone under military and police protection.

When de-mining personnel reached the site, they found the injured man attempting to administer first aid to himself while calling for help in both English and Chinese. He was visibly shaking from cold and trauma, prompting responders to stabilise him and provide additional medical treatment before evacuation. He was transported to Khok Sung Hospital for further care.

Authorities confirmed the man is currently receiving treatment at the hospital. Investigators from Khok Sung Police Station have begun initial coordination on the case, focusing on the circumstances of his illegal entry. Immigration officers from Sa Kaeo have been notified and will take over the investigation into his attempted border crossing.

The incident highlights the ongoing danger posed by uncleared landmines along sections of the Thai-Cambodian border. Security units continue to rely on surveillance drones and specialised de-mining teams to manage emergencies in these restricted areas. Officials emphasised that certain border zones remain unsafe for any unauthorised entry.

Naewna reported that further inquiries will determine how the man entered the area and whether others may have been involved in the attempted crossing. Police and immigration authorities are expected to question him once his medical condition stabilises. The results of the investigation will guide any legal action relating to his illegal border entry.

Key Takeaways

• A Chinese man was injured after stepping on a landmine while illegally crossing the Thai-Cambodian border at Ban Nong Chan.

• De-mining and security teams conducted a coordinated rescue operation using drones and protective patrols.

• Police and immigration officials are now handling the investigation into his attempted illegal entry.

Desperate, or just plain dumb?

Horrific. The article doesn't say if he lost a leg.

Adventure trip, how much does a tour cost? The price depends on the number of mines exploded...

From today's Khmer Times in Cambodia (1/12/2025)

Amid an uneasy ceasefire, Cambodia and Thailand give varying accounts of where, why and how an undocumented Chinese national got his foot blown off by a landmine.

Also from the same edition:

while Cambodian immigration records show no trace of the victim entering or exiting the country.

He'll have lost a foot. That's what Landmines are supposed to do. It forces enemy troops to give first aid and slows them down. If mines killed it wouldn't hinder an advance because the dead don't need help.

And if he was fleeing scam gangsters?

We have no idea what he was doing there or even which way he was going. It's certainly odd since the Chinese have VE status in Thailand. If he was trying to get IN, it's weird or fishy.

May have escaped an illegal scam centre in Cambodia.

Your compassion for human beings is staggeringly impressive, along with your bigotry. I'll put you in for a nobel prize. As far as human beings go, I would place more value in the Chinese guy's life  than someone like you, with your dehumanization of someone of because of their  ethnicity.

Why was this comment necessary?

The fact of illegally crossing a border that is known to be mined in large areas can only be described as an 'adventure trip'.

Why are Chinese continually found crossing illegally between Thailand and Cambodia, Thailand and Laos and Thailand and Myanmar?

I understand why Myanmar citizens cross illegally into Thailand. It is usually to escape poverty and sometimes to escape an active war zone. However what is the driver for the Chinese? Couldn't they just use a passport?
