Trump Erupts At Press As Asylum Freeze Sparks National Firestorm

President Donald Trump unleashed a blistering tirade at reporters on Sunday, barking “get them outta here!” as he vowed to extend his nationwide pause on asylum decisions indefinitely — a sweeping crackdown triggered by the shocking killing of a National Guard member just steps from the White House.

The fury followed the death of 20-year-old Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, gunned down in Washington, D.C. on November 26. Another Guardsman, Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, remains in critical condition. Police have charged 29-year-old Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal with first-degree murder. Lakanwal, once part of a CIA-backed anti-Taliban force, resettled in the U.S. after the 2021 withdrawal.

Trump’s message to reporters was unambiguous and explosive. Asked how long the asylum freeze would last, he shot back: “A long time. No time limit.” He then linked the pause to 19 countries already under U.S. travel restrictions, declaring: “We don’t want those people… many have been no good, and they shouldn’t be in our country. We’re going to get them out of here!”

The administration insists the freeze is essential to national security. But the political blast radius widened instantly. Lakanwal was granted asylum in April 2025 under Trump’s own administration, yet senior officials blamed “lax vetting under Joe Biden” for his initial entry during the chaotic Afghan airlift — a charge Democrats called pure scapegoating.

Trump went further, promising to “permanently pause migration from all Third World countries” until, he claimed, the U.S. system can “fully recover.” DHS confirmed such a policy would heavily affect nations like Afghanistan, Cuba, Haiti, Iran and Myanmar.

The president also revealed he had invited Beckstrom’s grieving family to the White House, telling them the nation would “honor Sarah.” He extended a similar offer to Wolfe, saying the executive mansion was open to him “to recover or not.”

Across West Virginia, vigils for Beckstrom have reignited anger over Biden-era Afghan resettlement policies — and sparked fresh battles over the trajectory of U.S. asylum law under an increasingly uncompromising President Trump. The fallout shows no sign of cooling, especially after Trump’s volcanic confrontation with the press.

Key Takeaways

  • Trump vows an indefinite asylum freeze after the fatal D.C. shooting of a National Guard member.

  • Afghan suspect had been granted asylum under Trump but entered during Biden’s Afghan airlift, fueling political blame.

  • Trump promises sweeping new migration pauses and erupts at reporters as the White House faces mounting scrutiny.

All those advocating for more asylum seekers entering the country should commit to sponsoring one of them and providing a place for them to live for a while.

That way, the financial burden would be off the hard-working American taxpayers.

Gonna be interesting to see how this plays out.

This suspension will be halted, temporarily, be a Federal judge issuing am injunction or TRO.

I understand the ACLU and others are already gearing up suits for Dec 2–5, citing discrimination and refugee law violations.

But President Trump must have seen this coming???:whistling:

Refugee law violations! If we have a law that says we must allow in refugees from all the crap countries in the world, then Trump is right in closing that door. Trump is a weirdo -- but I must admit he's taken some actions for America's benefit that others were too timid to take, like demanding NATO finally pay its fair share; and finally sealing the borders against unwanted immigrants. A bull in a china shop can be fun to watch -- depending on which china is being broken.

Ten million let in during the last administration.  Much easier to open the borders.  Going to take a huge effort to find and deport those ten million.

Assertion: More than 10 million undocumented immigrants have flooded across our border during the Biden administration, while the Trump administration saw the lowest number of crossings in United States history.

Response: This is a misleading statement, as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) characterizes border crossings as “encounters,” when migrants are encountered by the Border Patrol and can be returned. According to DHS, over 4 million of migrants encountered have been returned and 20-25 percent encountered are repeat offenders, severely lowering the total amount during the Biden administration.

Stephen Miller must be permanently hard at hearing this news.

He did not say he would get all the asylum seekers out. He said he would not allow new ones to enter. Asylum seeking and illegal immigrants are 2 different things.

An asylum seeker is someone who flees their home country due to persecution or fear of persecution based on race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group. They apply for protection under international law and await a decision on their status.

An illegal immigrant is someone who enters or stays in a country without legal permission, which could mean bypassing official entry, overstaying a visa, or violating immigration laws. They may or may not be fleeing persecution, but they haven't sought asylum through legal channels.

The key difference is that asylum seekers are requesting legal protection, while illegal immigrants are in a country without legal authorization.

And which, exactly, are 'crap countries'? If these countries are, as Trump put it so succinctly, 's*it-hole countries', all the more reason to allow people to flee.

I've been in Venezuela, under Chavez, during the currency crisis. Why was there a currency crisis? Because of US sanctions on Venezuelan oil.

Cuba is more-or-less a model society. No gun crime, lots of doctors, reasonable govt, and probably lots more the US is lacking.

Some of those churches in the US are nothing more than a self-anointed cleric with a dais and a collection plate.  The industrial sector is dubbed ministry.  Oh, and TAX EXEMPT!!!

USA, the "roll your own religion" country.  So far.
