The Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) announced a significant increase in its Outpatient HIV/AIDS Treatment (OHAT) Package, boosting annual coverage from P30,000 to P58,500. This decision arrives amid rising HIV cases in the country, with over 5,500 new cases reported between July and September this year. The announcement coincides with global World AIDS Day efforts to improve awareness and support for those affected by HIV.

PhilHealth's increased coverage aims to address the alarming trend of HIV affecting younger demographics. Dr. Edwin Mercado, PhilHealth President and CEO, highlighted the importance of family support for affected youth, encouraging early prevention and regular care through Yakap clinics. The Department of Health (DOH) has also suggested declaring a national public health emergency as the cases increase.

PhilHealth's enhanced OHAT Package includes benefits such as anti-retroviral therapy for those with confirmed HIV test results from certified facilities, regardless of clinical or immunologic status. It aims to provide comprehensive care through essential services required for effective disease management. The package is accessible at 234 accredited HIV treatment hubs across the Philippines.

PhilHealth disbursed P1.6 billion last year to cover 176,819 HIV treatment claims, reflecting its commitment to supporting individuals with HIV. Experts believe this expanded coverage will significantly aid in managing the disease, offering a crucial lifeline to many Filipinos.

Looking forward, further measures may be implemented depending on the proposal to declare a national public health emergency. PhilHealth and the DOH continue to emphasize the importance of prevention, early detection, and consistent treatment in managing the HIV epidemic effectively, reported Inquirer.

Key Takeaways

  • PhilHealth increases HIV treatment coverage to P58,500 annually.
  • Rising HIV cases prompt calls for a national public health emergency.
  • Coverage includes comprehensive services available at 234 treatment hubs.

You see the same phenomenon in many countries, namely higher rates of HIV infection, which is not surprising in itself, as people are no longer taking it seriously and are using less contraception, which is highly reprehensible.
But even more reprehensible is the fact that the United States has stopped all subsidies for HIV medication in African countries, causing the number of cases to rise sharply.
