AI surveillance cameras at the Nong Khai border checkpoint identified a wanted suspect moments before he attempted to cross into Laos, leading to his immediate arrest on 5 December. The alert occurred at 10:00, coinciding with an inspection visit by Pol Lt Gen Saksira Phueak-am, Commissioner of the Tourist Police, who was reviewing holiday security operations at the checkpoint. Officers from the Tourist Police and Immigration Police acted on the real-time alert and detained the man, who was wanted in a “mule account” fraud case.

Authorities said the Nong Khai Tourist Police AI system flagged the individual as a suspect linked to an outstanding arrest warrant relating to the use of illegal bank accounts. The system notified officers just as senior police officials, including Pol Maj Gen Olan Iemprapas of Tourist Police Division 2 and Pol Col Noppadol Rakchat, Superintendent of Nong Khai Immigration, were present to inspect facilitation measures for travellers during the long holiday. The integration of automated alerts with on-site officers enabled an immediate response.

The arrest marks the 648th suspect apprehended through the Tourist Police AI camera system, which has been deployed to enhance monitoring at high-traffic travel points. Police stated that the system’s ability to scan, detect, and cross-reference individuals with outstanding warrants has significantly strengthened prevention efforts. Officials emphasised that such technology helps increase safety and public confidence at busy border crossings.

Pol Lt Gen Saksira praised the cooperation between Nong Khai Tourist Police and Immigration Police, highlighting the effective coordination that led to the swift arrest. He said the teamwork demonstrated the value of integrated policing during peak travel periods, particularly in areas frequented by international visitors. The operation was cited as an example of proactive border security contributing to a safer environment for both tourists and residents.

Matichon reported that police will proceed with formal processing of the arrested suspect and transfer him for further legal action in accordance with the warrant. Authorities noted that AI-assisted monitoring will continue throughout the holiday period and every day, to support crowd management and detect high-risk individuals. Additional reviews of the system’s performance are expected as part of efforts to further strengthen cross-agency operations at border checkpoints.

Apprehended just at the very moment the big wigs were visiting. Riiight.

Wouldn’t he have been identified anyway when his passport was checked at the border? Or isn’t the computer system in use there?

Are you insinuating that the system was only switched on for the arrival of the big wigs?  How could you!

Call me sceptical, but " The alert occurred at 10:00, coinciding with an inspection visit by Pol Lt Gen Saksira Phueak-am, Commissioner of the Tourist Police," is far too much of a coincidence.

Ask me the same question...and I'll answer it was all a set up, staged for the publicity.
