Authorities in Chiang Rai seized eight million methamphetamine pills on 6 December 2025 after intercepting a narcotics shipment concealed inside a passenger car parked at a local shopping mall. The operation involved multiple security and anti-drug agencies working together to block the trafficking route from the northern border into inner provinces. Officers moved in after tracking a suspect vehicle believed to be transporting a large quantity of illegal drugs.

The coordinated operation was carried out by the Rapid Deployment Unit of the Thap Chao Tak Special Task Force under Pha Muang Force, military intelligence units from the Royal Thai Army, the Chiang Rai Provincial Narcotics Suppression Unit and police from Ban Du Police Station. The action followed intelligence indicating that a significant drug shipment would be moved from the border region into the country’s interior. Officers monitored the movement closely as part of ongoing efforts to disrupt major trafficking networks.

Investigators learned that the suspect, a 35-year-old man from Ban Len, Bang Pa-in district, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya province, had travelled from the central region towards Chiang Rai. He was driving a white Honda Spada registered in Khon Kaen. Once the car reached the border area, officers maintained continuous surveillance to confirm its movements and potential rendezvous points.

The suspect vehicle was followed and found parked in a shopping mall carpark in Ban Du, Mueang Chiang Rai district. Officers approached and secured the scene before searching the vehicle. The suspect, who the driver, was taken into custody.

Inside the vehicle, authorities discovered multiple sacks wrapped in black plastic. Inspection revealed 39 sacks of Category 1 narcotics (methamphetamine), amounting to an estimated eight million pills. The scale of the seizure made it one of the largest intercepted in the area in recent months.

Naewna reported that the suspect was detained together with the seized narcotics as agencies work to expand the investigation and identify all individuals linked to the trafficking network. Officials noted that the operation was conducted under the Narcotics Code B.E. 2564, reflecting intensified enforcement aimed at dismantling drug supply routes along the northern border. Further inquiries will focus on the source of the drugs and the organisation responsible for transporting them into the region.
