The Thai Transport Ministry has enhanced security at Buriram Airport due to unrest along the Thai-Cambodian border. Deputy Transport Minister Mallika Jiraphanwanich announced tighter checks on people, baggage, and vehicles at the airport following incidents in Buri Ram on December 7. Additional security personnel and equipment are now operational 24/7, improving readiness and response to emergencies.

In light of the unrest, the Department of Airports (DoA) has been urged to coordinate with local security agencies, including police and military, for stronger intelligence-sharing and monitoring. Measures are in place to maintain public confidence and ensure safety at the airport. Authorities are also prioritizing support for agencies assisting those affected by the border tensions.

Danai Ruangsorn, DoA director-general, confirmed that all airports under the DoA's management are on high alert, ready to implement their emergency plans at any time. The DoA has set up an operations center dedicated to overseeing disaster and security-related incidents, ensuring regular communication with the Transport Ministry and local airport operations.

Despite heightened security, Buriram Airport continues normal operations with full facilities and staffing to serve passengers. Travelers are advised to anticipate additional security checks and plan for extra time when heading to the airport. The airport's enhanced measures are part of ongoing efforts to safeguard passengers and staff amid regional instability, reported The Nation.

Key Takeaways

  • Buriram Airport has increased security due to Thai-Cambodian border unrest.
  • The Department of Airports is coordinating closely with local agencies.
  • Travelers should expect additional checks and allow extra travel time.

I don’t imagine it having much impact on travellers on the two of three daily flights that depart from the airport.

I haven't been up to the airport this year but is the new terminal open ?

For information, Buriram Airport is 192kms from the Cambodian border at O'Smach. Thai paranoia?

As the drone flies? [It takes us max. 2.5 hours to get from Prasat Surin to Buriram airport - 2 hours if my b/f is driving.]

According to Google maps the distance by road varies between 149km, 159km & 165km depending on the route chosen
