Recommendations for Hia Hin

Featured Replies

I've been living next to Khao Yai National Park for 6 months. The air quality is good, we are 500m above sea level so the weather is relatively cool. It's enormously popular as a weekend retreat for Bangkok Thais. However.... prices are comparable to Phuket beach front and my god is it boring. So I'm coming down to Hua Hin for a holiday and to check it out as a potential home. I don't do girly bars and all that seedy rubbish. I'm looking for some recommendations in terms of decent meeting places, areas to stay and importantly where to stay away from (including flooding). Apologies, this has been a bit rambling but looking forward to hearing from anyone in the region. Thanks, Rob

We usually stay ibis, comfy bed, and pet friendly.   Probably not the best value, but we travel with dog, and we like the quiet area.  They use one floor for pets staying, so if having allergies, no worries, just let them know.  It's on the southern end away from tourist area.

Walking distance to Bluport Mall, although I drive, but an easy walk.   They have decent food court & vendors.   Good for exploring the area, as I guess anywhere really is.   Nicer section of beach, though personally, wouldn't swim in it.

I'm not a big fan of HH, but I see the attraction for folks.  It can get gridlock at times, as Bangkokians love it also.   A bit further than Patts, without the 'in your face' adult nightlife.

Got some nice rolling hills to the west, toward Pala U.  Decent shopping, 2 malls, Market Village being the other, and why we visit often, as living 100+ kms south of HH, with minimal shopping.

Hua Hin is the most civil and most modern of the tourist cities. It hosts a better class, albeit older foreign demographic. It also has a large Thai population that is present everywhere. The benefit is that it isn't a farang ghetto like Samui or Pattaya or Patong. Crime rates are relatively low, and vehicle crashes like those on Phuket or Samui are infrequent. The city has everything from modern hospitals, to a wide range of restaurants including excellent Thai cuisine, to varied retail and services. The beach is best for walking or running. It is wide and relatively clean. If you want to swim, head 8 km south to the Pines. Hotel options are good, although serviced apartments could be better. The only negatives are the the transport links to Bangkok. Took me almost 4 hours last week. Train schedule is poor too. They really need a direct rail link to the BKK airport. I haven't used the bust from BKK in 3 years since it is inconvenient and an unpleasant experience now. Wish the Hua Hin airport was functional with regional service.
