Thai and Chinese officials inspected demolished scam centres in Myanmar, marking a significant advancement in their joint battle against fraud operations affecting Asia and beyond. Police Lt. Gen. Jiraphob Phuridet from Thailand's Anti-Cyber Scam Centre and China's Liu Zhongyi surveyed the ruins at KK Park and Shwe Kokko, which previously served as headquarters for international scam rings.

The inspection on December 15, led by Myanmar's Deputy Police Commander, Min Htike Myo, revealed the aftermath of recently razed buildings that once thrived as centres of fraud and illegal activity. Following their tour, representatives from Thailand, China, and Myanmar convened at the Second Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge. They agreed to establish a Joint Task Force to swiftly exchange intelligence and evidence.

Thailand’s Anti-Cyber Scam Centre will act as the primary channel for this information exchange. Officials highlighted the importance of borderless cooperation in combating crime, committing to share intelligence within 24 hours upon request. This initiative aims to disrupt criminal networks by severing essential services like electricity and internet access and aiding the repatriation of foreign nationals stranded in Myanmar.

During the visit, the Chinese delegation also inspected a Myawaddy detention centre, where Chinese fraud suspects were awaiting extradition. The inspections and agreements underline the trilateral commitment to dismantle long-standing transnational scam operations in the region, reported Khaosod.

Key Takeaways:

  • Thai and Chinese officials inspect demolished scam sites in Myanmar.
  • A Joint Task Force will share intelligence swiftly to combat cross-border fraud.
  • Efforts focus on cutting support to criminal networks and aiding repatriation.
