Today, a 19-year-old vocational student was rescued by police in Kamphaeng Phet after being targeted by scammers posing as Department of Special Investigation (DSI) officers. Police located the student at a resort in the Mueang district, where he had been persuaded by the scammers to book a room under false pretenses. Earlier, the same scam deceived another student from the same college, who was tricked into transferring 7,384 baht from his student loan and freelance earnings.

Investigators took both victims to Mueang Kamphaeng Phet Police Station to record official statements. The first victim, known as Rainbow, reported receiving a call from an unfamiliar number at around 4:30 PM. He was instructed to add a LINE account, falsely claiming to be from the DSI, and was misled into believing a legal case was being fabricated against him.

The scammers convinced Rainbow to send proof of a resort booking, promising reimbursement. They threatened him not to leave the room, citing a fake 50,000 baht mule account offense and demanded access to his banking apps to inspect his accounts. He was coerced into preparing to transfer 25,000 baht, but his relatives, using GPS, intervened in time to prevent any financial loss.

The second victim realized the scam only after transferring money twice under pressure from the fraudsters. Both victims were assured by police that genuine government agencies would never request money or information in such a manner. Authorities urged individuals receiving similar calls to immediately disconnect and report to the police.

In related developments, police have detained a significant player in another call scam, which involved impersonation of the Mueang Mukdahan Police Station to swindle over 40,000 baht, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • Police rescued a student deceived by scammers posing as DSI officers.
  • A second student lost funds and later reported the scam.
  • Authorities caution against transferring money to alleged government agents.
