Prasat, Surin: need to register at local police

Featured Replies

Some lady came by the house telling us we have to register at the local police station, she had a long list of names. I guess this has to do with the war??

Nothing here as yet. Who was the 'some lady'? Headwoman of your village? Police woman?

Don't know, she talked to my wife. Wife went out right after so I'll wait and ask when she gets back.

I think on reflection (and my b/f's experience of having to register) it's just the local headwoman keeping track of who's where as the locals return from refugee camping post-ceasefire on the border.

lets hope it doesn't result in fines for not updating TM 30 if evacuated, I didn't notify anybody when we got evacuated from kap choeng, The hotel I stayed in did not look at my passport just the mrs' ID card. I was due to do my 90 days report on 1/1 /2026 and was a little concerned as Kap choeng Immigration was closed, I worried that Surin office might ask about where I had been staying when evacuated, Fortunately the Kap choeng office was open on the 29/12 so no problems Friends in Prasat reported receiving visits from immigration a few weeks ago photos were taken of them holding their passports whilst stood outside their houses,

I doubt the local poo yai ban is keeping track, its probably a bit above her paygrade , possibly she's following instructions from immigration, in fact the woman could have been an immigration officer

Is she not back yet ? or are you keeping us in suspense deliberately

A mate of mine on a retirement extension living in Ban Pluang (about 8km south of prasat ) got a surprise visit a few weeks ago from 2 immigration officers , the usual photos were taken , their explanation was that they had nothing else to do as things were so quiet, this was just before the evacuation

Yes, I had the same thing 2 or 3 months ago. My b/f was away at the family farm & I got a blast later for opening the gate to 4 individuals wearing uniform but could have been burglars or kidnappers. He wasn't satisfied till he had later rung various contacts to check on their bona fides.

Which shows what the locals think of those in uniform ...

indeed, but have you noticed how they modify their behaviour when in the prescience of a uniformed individual or even just somebody considered to have "status" ? I have spent a bit of time in hospitals recently , my Mrs is aghast at how I speak to the doctors and nurses,( ie as if they were normal people) especially as I do it in Thai, She is almost prostrating herself on the floor when she dares to ask them something. If she is not sure where we should be for an appointment she will actively look for a cleaner or janitor to ask rather than bother anybody she considers superior

When I was discharged from Surin hospital recently All the doctors and nurses involved in my treatment came to say goodbye and wish me well, including one of the hospital directors, the expression on the wifes face was priceless

Sure sign of an antique culture (cf Brits): social hierarchy dictates behaviours & outcomes.

Was just that the police wants to know who and what because of the warlike situation. In and out in a minute.
