The Malaysian pencak silat team reportedly assaulted referees and officials during a SEA Games competition in Thailand on December 15, following a contentious decision favoring a Thai athlete. The incident occurred during the women's pencak silat Class B quarter-final, where a 60-60 draw led to a controversial ruling in favor of Jongthima Ruenthong of Thailand over Malaysia’s Nor Farah Mazlan. Officials deemed Mazlan committed more fouls, sparking protests and subsequent chaos.

The match result caused immediate dissatisfaction among Malaysian athletes and staff, who believed Mazlan's performance was superior. Malaysian head coach Siti Rahmah Mohamed Naser filed a formal protest, which was rejected, escalating tensions further. Reports indicated that frustrated team members physically confronted referees and officials, requiring security intervention to restore order at Impact Arena.

With the match temporarily suspended, organizers upheld the original decision, officially declaring the Thai athlete the winner. The Malaysian team departed the venue, visibly frustrated. Malaysian media criticized the referees’ professionalism, while emphasizing that violence is never justified. Concerns about transparency and fairness in the refereeing process were also highlighted.

In further developments, the SEA Games faced another controversy on December 16 during a men’s 65kg pencak silat match. The Thai organizers were criticized for inadequate medical response when a Vietnamese athlete was injured. Nakrob Thongdaeng, Technical Chairman of the Pencak Silat Association of Thailand, defended their actions, accusing the athlete of exaggerating his condition for scoring benefits.

Additionally, controversy arose during the Arena of Valour e-sports competition when Thailand’s female team withdrew amidst allegations of rule violations. Accusations against a player for using a banned application to facilitate another’s participation are under investigation. The player denied the claim, with the case remaining unresolved, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • The Malaysian team allegedly assaulted referees due to a ruling dispute.
  • Malaysian media criticized the decision but condemned the violence.
  • Other SEA Games controversies included medical and e-sport disputes.

Is that a girl fighting a guy in the video. Looks like it, and from the score it looks like she's beating up on him.

Indonesian kung-fu

Watched all 15 minutes plus of the video. Didn't see an assault. Just a group of people milling around towards the end.
