Cyber Police have arrested a 41-year-old man accused of selling firearms and ammunition online, seizing a large cache of weapons and related items during coordinated searches in Nakhon Ratchasima. The arrest took place on 19 December at 10:55, with officers intercepting the suspect as he attempted to send illegal items to customers via a parcel delivery service.

The operation was carried out under the direction of senior Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau officers, including Pol Lt Gen Surapol Prembutr, Commissioner of the bureau, alongside senior deputies and commanders from Cyber Police Division 5. Acting on intelligence that illegal items were being shipped from a parcel shop in the Non Farang area, officers from Subdivision 4, Division 5, placed the location under surveillance.

Police observed the suspect, identified as Somporn Chanayong, arriving on a motorcycle with a sidecar carrying a parcel box. Officers identified themselves and conducted a search, discovering ammunition and firearm components inside the parcel that were about to be sent to customers who had placed online orders. He was immediately taken into custody.

A subsequent search of Somporn’s home in Hua Thale subdistrict, Mueang Nakhon Ratchasima district, was conducted after officers presented a search warrant. Inside a storage room, police found additional firearm parts and weapons. The seized items included 95 rounds of .38 ammunition, 850 rounds of .22 LR ammunition, five 20-gauge shotgun shells, unregistered .22 calibre firearm components, a PCP high-pressure air rifle, a short-barrel 20-gauge shotgun, a firearm suppressor and a mobile phone.

During questioning, Somporn admitted that all seized items belonged to him. He told police that the unregistered PCP air rifle had been purchased for hunting, while the unassembled .22 calibre firearm parts were bought from a seller on Facebook with the intention of assembling the weapon for personal use. He also acknowledged purchasing the short-barrel shotgun and ammunition from Facebook, claiming it was for self-defence.

Somporn further led officers to a pig farm he owned, where additional weapons and ammunition were stored and seized. He stated that some .38 ammunition had been ordered by customers who later cancelled, while the .22 ammunition and suppressor were for his own use.

Police have charged the suspect with manufacturing, possessing and selling firearms and ammunition without a licence, as well as possessing controlled military equipment, namely a suppressor, without authorisation. He and the seized items were handed over to investigators at Mueang Nakhon Ratchasima Police Station for further legal proceedings.

Matichon reported that Cyber Police say investigations will continue into online firearm trading networks, with officers working to identify suppliers and buyers linked to illegal weapons sales on social media platforms.
