Thailand Delays Release of Cambodian Soldiers Over Drone Claims

Thailand has postponed the release of 18 Cambodian soldiers, citing breaches in the newly established ceasefire. This move follows reports of 250 unauthorised Cambodian drones spotted in contested border areas, which heightens the tension amidst ongoing efforts to solidify peace. The ceasefire, originally aimed at mending Thai-Cambodian relations, has encountered obstacles threatening its stability.

A recent agreement, signed in Chanthaburi by the defence ministers of both nations, stipulated the release of the detained soldiers after a 72-hour period of peace. However, Thai authorities reported the drone activity as a "provocation," influencing their decision to delay the handover. The Foreign Minister, Sihasak Phuangketkeow, has emphasised the fragility of the agreement and the need for restraint to prevent the situation from escalating.

Thai officials, led by spokesman Nikorndej Balankura, explained the delay in releasing the soldiers, caught during hostilities in July, as an issue of security. In response, Thai representatives have also requested assistance from Cambodia in returning Thai nationals abroad, suggesting a potential meeting after the New Year to establish a framework for improved relations.

Cambodia has denied any involvement with drones, asserting a nationwide ban on their use. In response to Thai allegations, Cambodian government spokesperson Pen Bona noted that they are monitoring the situation, but no formal response has been issued regarding the delayed release of soldiers.

The tension extends to recent injuries suffered by a Thai soldier due to a landmine in Si Sa Ket province, rekindling grievances. These landmines and territorial disputes previously sparked renewed clashes resulting in casualties and displacement.

In a related development, Thai military reports continue to observe Cambodian troop movements and logistical deployments along the border, maintaining vigilance despite the absence of heavy combat. Surveillance drones and supply transports have been detected, indicating persistent military activities on both sides.

Key Takeaways:

  • Thailand delays releasing Cambodian soldiers due to drone incidents.

  • Cambodian drones allegedly breached ceasefire, causing tensions.

  • Talks of cooperation and roadmap set for possible post-New Year dialogue.
