CAAT Steps up Aviation Safety Checks During Holiday Surge

Thailand’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAAT) has increased the frequency of aircraft and flight operation inspections during the festive period, responding to a surge in flights and passenger demand, with the immediate impact being tighter safety oversight across domestic aviation operations to ensure safe and reliable travel. The measures are intended to maintain high safety standards while accommodating increased flight schedules and seat capacity during the New Year holiday period.

The announcement, issued on 29 December, comes as airlines add extra flights to meet seasonal travel demand, particularly on domestic routes. CAAT’s Flight Operations Standards Division and Airworthiness and Aeronautical Engineering Division are jointly conducting more intensive checks to strengthen aviation safety and reinforce confidence among aviation personnel and passengers.

According to CAAT, the rise in flight numbers during the New Year travel period has led the authority to introduce special, more frequent ramp inspections of Thai airlines. These inspections are carried out during actual operations before aircraft departure, allowing inspectors to assess real-time operational readiness and compliance with civil aviation safety standards.

The inspections cover aircraft condition, cabin readiness and the availability and serviceability of onboard safety equipment. They also include checks on the preparedness of flight crew, such as pilots and cabin crew, as well as ground handling services and other airport apron operations conducted under standards certified or approved by CAAT.

If any deficiencies or potential safety issues are identified, CAAT will immediately instruct the airline concerned to rectify them. Aircraft are only permitted to operate once corrective actions have been completed and compliance with civil aviation safety standards has been fully verified.

CAAT has emphasised that effective communication with airlines is a key part of the enhanced inspection programme. Airlines are being urged to ensure staff readiness, aircraft condition, the availability of critical spare parts and the implementation of contingency plans for potential aircraft technical issues, particularly given the heavier flight schedules during extended public holidays.

SaimRath reported that the authority stressed that the intensified ramp inspections are additional to routine oversight measures already in place. This proactive approach is aimed at sustaining Thailand’s aviation safety standards and ensuring that air travel during the festive season remains safe, stable and continuous for the public.

Key Takeaways

• CAAT has increased ramp inspections during the New Year travel period due to higher domestic flight volumes.

• Inspections focus on aircraft condition, crew readiness, safety equipment, and ground operations.

• Identified safety issues must be corrected immediately before flights are authorised to operate.
