Surge in Tourists Causes Congestion at Trat's Ferry Terminal

Tourist activity in Trat province has surged as the New Year Festival kicks off, bringing significant traffic congestion to the Laem Ngop Ferry Terminal. On December 30, 2025, a substantial number of both Thai and international tourists, traveling by car and motorcycle, queued to purchase ferry tickets to Koh Chang, resulting in a traffic build-up over a kilometer long. This congestion is being managed by local police and viewed positively by business operators as a sign of economic revival.

The influx follows recent concerns around the Thai-Cambodian border, though officials and tourists affirm the safety of popular destinations such as Koh Kood and Koh Mak. Five ferries operated continuously to accommodate the demand, departing as soon as they reached capacity. The police have warned drivers to adhere to traffic regulations, as some vehicles have tried to cut queues, risking accidents and conflicts.

Activity was similarly hectic at Laem Sok Pier in Mueang District, the gateway to Koh Kood and Koh Mak, where major operators like Boonsiri High Speed Catamaran facilitated the transit of 500 to 700 passengers. Despite the bustle, some operators reported slightly lower tourist numbers compared to the previous year, a situation attributed to news of Thai-Cambodian border skirmishes, which may have affected travelers' decisions.

Officials, including Mr. Sattaya Promprathet of Boonsiri, assured that the islands remain unaffected by border tensions, calling for enhanced public relations efforts to reassure visitors. Tourists like Mr. Natthapong Artvichai expressed confidence in the safety of these destinations, citing the calm and clear conditions away from the conflict zones. Looking ahead, police anticipate increased traveler numbers and advise early trip planning to mitigate anticipated congestion, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • Tourist volume is high despite border tensions, indicating economic optimism.

  • Authorities are actively managing traffic to ensure safety and prevent disruptions.

  • Officials highlight that tourist areas are unaffected by regional skirmishes.

On the one hand it's good for local business in Trat and on Chang.

On the other, Chang is no longer the quiet (secret) place I remember.

Too much trash, too much traffic.... I'll wait till green season.

Trat though could really use a boost. Potential there.
