A 22-year-old French tourist, Alexis, died tragically on Monday morning after a fatal fall at a waterfall on Koh Samui. The incident occurred while he was taking photos at the top of Na Muang 2 Waterfall, leaving local authorities scrambling to investigate the circumstances. The victim's distraught wife alerted police to the accident at 11:30 a.m. on 5th January.

Officers arrived and found Alexis's wife, visibly shaken by the ordeal, at the base of the waterfall. She revealed that they had travelled to the scenic spot from their hotel in Bo Phut to capture the beauty of the falls. During the photo session, Alexis reportedly stepped backward, lost his footing on the wet rocks, and plummeted to the bottom of the waterfall.

The tragic accident underscores the inherent risks of exploring such natural attractions without adequate precautions. Local investigators are thoroughly examining the scene to determine any contributing factors to the accident. The heartbreaking event has served as a sobering reminder for tourists to exercise caution while visiting such sites.

Looking forward, local officials may consider implementing additional safety measures to prevent future incidents. The tragedy illustrates the constant need to raise awareness regarding safety in tourist destinations. The authorities have not made any public statements regarding policy changes or specific safety recommendations as investigations continue, reported Khaosod.

One must be aware of the risks of walking to close to the edge on slippery rocks. With normal brain function instead of selfie interest, this could have been easily avoided.

How many people have fallen and died already there? Highest time to stop people climbing up, put barriers.

Was he wearing proper footwear like a pair of boots or good quality trainers these waterfalls are not for people who wear flip flops or other forms of flimsy footwear and I’ve seen plenty of tourists who visit these places with unsuitable footwear RIP

I don't think footwear is the only issue; it's a danger spot and should be fenced off to prevent tourists from going to the edge. Countless people have died in similar situations.

When is Thailand going to take Health and safety seriously?

Waterfalls are dangerous at low water because they leave behind real smooth and shinney rocks ,easy to slip and fall.

Approximately 1 per year the last two decades. A couple of years was death free, but survived falls still happened. 16-17 deaths. A double death happened if memory serves.

The slips are caused by a gray lichen, fed by the constant mist, that mostly looks just like the rock, not a green slime, and people think it’s just wet rock. Step on it and your feet go out from under you and the only hand holds are just as slippery.

There are many warning signs, I was up there last January and saw them. I also believed them and did Not fall. It’s mostly people mid twenties early thirties.

No - he stepped back while getting the all important selfie instead of facing the waterfall and enjoying the natural beauty - here in samui it never fails to amaze me how so many people miss the moment - death scrolling during stunning sunsets, etc . Nevertheless rip young man

Why not?

Despite all the warnings tourists still take too big a risk when trying to capture their ultimate selfie pictures at these waterfall locations and indeed paying the ultimate price for it. The Thai tourist authority can’t afford the negative publicity this casts and inevitably will have to instigate measures in preventing tourists from putting themselves at risk.
