Thai Army Region 2 has launched an urgent investigation after a mortar round landed at Hill 469 in the Chong Bok area of Ubon Ratchathani province, injuring one Thai soldier. The incident occurred on the morning of 6 January 2026 and immediately heightened security concerns along the Thai–Cambodian border. The injured soldier was taken for medical treatment, with authorities confirming his condition is not life-threatening.

According to initial reports, the incident took place at around 07.25–07.30 when a mortar round was fired into the area near Hill 469, also known as Phu Mi Malako Base, in Chong Bok. Army Region 2 commander Lt Gen Veerayut Raksilp said officials are in the process of verifying the circumstances surrounding the firing. He stated that further details would be released once the investigation progresses.

The injured soldier was identified as Sgt Maj Prachya Philachai, a platoon commander with the 1st Rifle Platoon, Company R.6021. He sustained shrapnel wounds to his right arm. Officials transported him immediately to a field hospital within the area, where he was assessed as a “green case”, meaning his injuries were minor and he is expected to recover fully.

Army Region 2 said relevant agencies are closely monitoring the situation and maintaining heightened security measures in the area. Lt Gen Veerayut reiterated that the military is focused on ensuring the safety of personnel while establishing clear facts about the incident. No further casualties were reported.

The incident prompted a strong response on social media after Army Region 2 posted a statement describing the firing as a violation of a ceasefire by Cambodia. The post, published on 6 January 2026, stated that a grenade launcher had been used in the Chong Bok area in front of Hill 469, resulting in one injured soldier who was being transferred for medical care.

Political reactions also followed, with Watsaworn Phuangprasit, leader of the Thai Ruam Palang Party, posting an update confirming the soldier’s identity, injury status and safety. Online reactions have been widespread, with some members of the public speculating about possible further clashes along the border, although authorities have confirmed no escalation.

Thailand’s army has issued a formal warning to Cambodia to strictly adhere to an existing ceasefire agreement after a grenade round fired from the Cambodian side landed in Thai territory, injuring one Thai soldier. The incident occurred at 7.40am on 6 January 2026 in Nam Yuen district, Ubon Ratchathani province, prompting heightened monitoring along the border but no escalation of force.

According to Major General Winthai Suvaree, spokesperson for the Royal Thai Army, units from the Suranaree Task Force under the Second Army Region reported hearing a single shot from an unidentified weapon originating from Cambodia. Subsequent checks confirmed it was a round from a grenade launcher that landed near Hill 469 inside Thailand. One Thai serviceman sustained minor injuries from shrapnel and no civilian casualties were reported.

The incident comes amid an existing ceasefire framework between Thailand and Cambodia aimed at preventing armed clashes along the shared border. Military coordination mechanisms remain in place to manage incidents and avoid misunderstandings.

Following the incident, Thai units were contacted by Cambodian counterparts, who stated there was no intention to fire into Thai territory. Cambodian authorities attributed the incident to an operational error by their own personnel. Thai forces on the ground issued an immediate warning, urging greater caution to prevent a recurrence.

Major General Winthai said Thailand had clearly communicated that any similar mistake in the future could compel Thai forces to respond in self-defence. He stressed that any response would be conducted under established rules of engagement and would be proportionate to the threat. The Thai Army reiterated the need for Cambodia to strictly observe ceasefire measures.

The Royal Thai Army stated it remains fully prepared with contingency plans for all possible scenarios. Its priority, the spokesperson said, is to safeguard Thai sovereignty and ensure the safety of lives and property of residents along the Thai–Cambodian border. Forces are currently in a state of close surveillance and continuous situation assessment.

The army also sought to reassure the public that the situation is not considered alarming at this stage. No further use of weapons has been detected in other areas, and residents in border communities have been advised they can continue their daily lives as normal. Authorities said the public would be informed immediately if the situation showed signs of worsening.

Amarin reported that the Thai military officials will continue close coordination and monitoring while maintaining readiness. Any significant developments or changes in the security situation along the border will be communicated promptly to both the government and the public.
