Police in Surat Thani have arrested a 44-year-old man accused of assaulting ride-hailing drivers and intimidating tourists at the Donsak ferry port, an incident authorities say could damage confidence in local tourism. The suspect, identified as Surachat or “Khai Nui” Sangkhro, was detained on 7 January 2026 under a court warrant issued by the Surat Thani Provincial Court. Police said the case highlights wider concerns about alleged organised intimidation and overcharging of passengers at the port.

The arrest followed complaints filed on 3 January by two Grab drivers who reported being assaulted during a dispute over transporting tourists at the ferry terminal in Don Sak district. According to investigators, the altercation occurred around 20:00 when the suspect allegedly struck the victims on the head during an argument over fares. Both drivers reported injuries and lodged formal complaints with Donsak Police Station.

Police said Surachat had already been on a local watch list due to previous complaints about harassment and threats against transport operators. Investigators tracked him down while he was walking near the ferry terminal and arrested him on charges of carrying a weapon in a public place without permission, possessing a firearm without reasonable cause and causing physical and mental harm to others. The arrest took place at about 10:00 on 7 January.

Following the arrest, officers searched the suspect’s home at 158/2 Moo 10, Don Sak subdistrict, and seized a registered 9mm handgun, seven rounds of ammunition, two magazines, a diving torch and clothing allegedly worn during the incident. During questioning, Surachat admitted to assaulting the drivers but claimed he used a diving torch rather than a firearm. He told police the dispute arose over alleged fare undercutting while coordinating transport for tourists arriving from Koh Samui.

Pol Col Thananchai Nuaniran, superintendent of Donsak Police Station, said the suspect is entitled to defend himself under the law, but police have strong evidence supporting the charges. He added that authorities have received repeated complaints about groups of transport operators extorting tourists, threatening competitors, and charging excessive fares. Such behaviour, he said, has harmed the image of tourism in Surat Thani province.

Daily News reported that police are now expanding the investigation after finding indications that the alleged misconduct may involve a wider network. Officers are gathering further evidence and urged members of the public and other victims to come forward with information. Authorities said legal action will be taken against all those found to be involved.
