The Royal Gazette has announced that His Majesty the King has granted special posthumous military promotions to 27 army personnel who were killed while performing their duties during emergency operations along the Thai-Cambodian border. The decision formally recognises the service and sacrifice of those who died in the line of duty, with higher ranks and royal decorations conferred on the fallen soldiers, taking effect through official publication on January 10, 2026.

The announcement, issued by the Office of the Prime Minister and published in the Royal Gazette on January 10, 2026, stated that the promotions were approved as a special royal gesture. It applies exclusively to personnel who lost their lives during emergency operations, reflecting both the circumstances of their deaths and the nature of their military service. The royal proclamation was countersigned by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, acting as the recipient of the royal command.

According to the Royal Gazette, the posthumous promotions covered a range of ranks. Eight sergeants were elevated to the rank of major general, two personnel were promoted to lieutenant colonel, four to major, one to first lieutenant, and 12 privates were elevated to the rank of second lieutenant. Each promotion was assigned a specific effective date between December 8 and December 26, 2025, corresponding to the timing of the individual deaths during operations.

Alongside the promotions, the King also granted special royal decorations to all 27 fallen soldiers. These honours were awarded in accordance with royal prerogative and established military protocol, and are intended to formally acknowledge bravery, dedication, and sacrifice in the performance of official duties.

The full list of names, ranks, and effective dates for each promotion was published in the Royal Gazette as part of the formal announcement. This publication serves as the legal and administrative record, ensuring that the promotions and decorations are officially recognised within Thailand’s military and state systems.

Posthumous promotions and royal decorations are traditionally used in Thailand to honour members of the armed forces who die while carrying out their duties. Such measures are routinely announced through the Royal Gazette to ensure transparency, legal validity, and public acknowledgement.

Khoasod reported that the formal publication allows the promotions and decorations to take effect immediately. Families of the deceased soldiers are expected to receive the associated honours and official recognition in line with established military and royal procedures.

I'm sure this will help the grieving families immensely. I do hope there is large monetary compensation for those families as well.

It would be useful for the Thai public to know how many of the fallen were conscripts.

Maybe the Privates. I hope they all get the same pension rights.
