Phuket authorities have intensified safety measures at Chalong Bay Pier after a fatal speedboat crash attributed to a drug-impaired driver. The crackdown involves random drug testing, with recent inspections revealing six tour boat workers testing positive for illegal substances. The initiative aims to boost safety and restore confidence among tourists visiting the region.

Following the deadly incident on January 11, when a speedboat with 55 passengers collided with a fishing boat, resulting in the death of 17-year-old Russian tourist Starykh Elezaveta and injuring at least 11 others, officials have moved quickly to address safety concerns. The speedboat driver tested positive for drugs, and a search of the vessel uncovered Yaba, cannabis, and kratom.

The recent measures are part of ongoing efforts to combat drug use in the tourism sector, prompted by several incidents in recent years at Chalong Bay Pier. Notably, in 2024, an accident near Mai Thon Beach resulted in the death of a young Russian girl due to a drug-impaired driver. A similar case in 2023 involved a speedboat crash injuring 37 tourists.

Authorities conducted over 100 tests at the pier, though specific drug types and legal repercussions have not been disclosed. The collaboration among Phuket Tourist Police, Marine Police, and other local agencies underlines a commitment to thorough safety overhauls in the wake of recurring incidents.

Looking forward, Phuket officials plan to continue rigorous monitoring and implement additional preventative measures at key tourism spots. The focus remains on ensuring a safe environment for both Thai and international visitors, with ongoing evaluations set to determine the effectiveness of the new safety protocols, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • Phuket has increased safety measures following a fatal speedboat crash.

They should check the drivers of the speedboats, but they were not checked. Also many boats are leaving before official opening hours of the pier, avoiding registration and other checks.

But apparently that doesn't matter. This check was aimed at saving face, not at actual safety.
