A newlywed couple from South Korea and Thailand lost their lives in a crane disaster in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, on January 14, just one day after their marriage. The accident resulted in 32 fatalities, including the couple who were traveling to visit family in Si Saket. The incident occurred when a construction crane collapsed onto a moving passenger train, also claiming the lives of a German national and others, while some passengers survived.

The South Korean man was identified as Kim Yongho, aged 37, and his Thai wife was Surattiyakorn "Kai" Kanya, aged 35. Their trip to Kai’s hometown was cut short by the tragic accident. This disaster not only impacts their families but has also sparked discussions about responsibility and safety protocols for construction near public transportation.

Kai’s mother, Lamyong Kanya, expressed deep sorrow, highlighting her daughter’s role as the family's primary provider. She and Kim had been together for over a decade, with Kai moving to South Korea four years ago. Their official marriage registration was completed just a day prior to the accident, on January 13.

Responses to the incident include calls from impacted families for government action and compensation. Kai's mother, in a heartfelt plea, urged authorities to address the negligence leading to the tragedy. Another couple, Kriangsak and Wantanee, were also victims, leaving their daughters to identify them through personal belongings like a gold necklace, as they await DNA confirmation for funerals.

The accident highlights ongoing concerns about safety in construction zones, especially those interacting with public transit systems. Authorities are expected to conduct thorough investigations to prevent future occurrences and offer adequate compensation to affected families, reported The Thaiger.
