Passport Missing Retire Extension Deadline In a Couple of Weeks

Featured Replies

damaged passport sent to the Embassy in Bangkok, in Dec 5. just had a call last week, to say they have mislaid it and if in fact did I include it with my application for a replacement passport. ( i did) but I'm sorta maybe screwed because i sent them an email, dec 6, listing my enclosures, which they never replied to. ChatGPT says I should seek a letter from the Embassy, addressed to Immigration describing the problem (I've done that last week). then, IF I get such a letter, i should get my axx in gear and head down to IO to seek an extension. does anyone have any addition advice. ? tia.

What a mess. Some countries require you to send existing pp with application. Think USA and Canada two examples. I don't know why.

Assume that you living in Thailand on ongoing annual extensions?

Have you contacted embassy re options.

By all means drop into immigration if possible however cannot imagine any success with that.

Emergency pp (travel doc) from embassy?

Passport country?

Don't you have any photo copies from your previous extension (maybe immigration have a copy they could give you) at least it would show proof of all of your passport details. If the embassy lost the passport, you would at least they would assist to expedite it as an emergency. Any letter from the embassy is sure to carry even a little bit of weight with Thai immigration and might buy you time - maybe there is some sort of 30 or 60 day extension which might buy yo enough time to receive the new passport, good luck!

Contact embassy immediately, ask for advise...you might need to go to the police, and report lost pp...get a copy of the report, embassy might ask for it. Apply for new pp, could require you to attend embassy.

While waiting for new pp, go talk to immigration.

But, best to also use a visa agent.

latest is a response from Embassy, to my request for a letter explaining the situation, addressed to Immigration: ' Well noted and please accept our sincere apologies that we misplaced your passport. But if we could not find it – we will issue you an official letter for Thai immigration. its difficult to get any sense of urgency on their part. there are 3 weeks to go to the annual retirement extension deadline.

Did you send it registered..also, if Embassy say they mislaid it, then they acknowledge they received it...your story has a few holes in it.

Usually an embassy wants to see you face to face, to prove who you are...are you trying to hide something from the embassy...why don't you even mention your country, what embassy.

Sorry to read of the passport issue. I renewed my Canadian passport last year via the Canadian embassy (sending documents by courier (I stayed in Phuket the entire time)), and there was no issue. It all went smoothly like clockwork. Its most unfortunate this has happened.

Since your existing passport has gone astray thanks to bungling incompetence and ineptitude on the part of the Canadian Embassy, the onus IMHO is fairly and squarely on the Embassy to discuss and agree with Immigration specifically how any letter should be worded, rather than for them to rely solely on what ChatGPT might have to say on the matter (which might have disastrous consequences for you). You really need to stress this point in no uncertain terms to those airy-fairy diplomatic clowns, in addition to impressing on them the urgency of the whole situation generally.

Having given some further thought to this matter, I wonder whether, in addition to a letter to Immigration, the Canadian Embassy should also be providing you with a temporary passport for the purposes of Immigration issuing you with a fresh extension of stay, depending on (1) for how long the temporary passport would be valid and, of course, (2) whether, as a matter of principle, Immigration would be prepared to stamp a fresh extension of stay in a temporary passport - which, again, the Embassy (rather than you) should IMHO be clarifying with them as necessary.

The link below contains further info on temporary passports. In all the circumstances I would earnestly hope that the Embassy didn't have the nerve to levy any charge on you for any temporary passport they issued!

i was sensible enough ( a rarity) to photo copy my passport before sending it the the Embassy. I am hoping that will help. i have developed a good relationship with the new head officer at IO. (fruit & wine) :)

Unbelievable they can lose a passport, bit like the agents who throw them about the shop carelessly

IMHO this is always a good idea. Hopefully not a 'rarity' in the future, albeit I sense you were 'joking'.

In Thailand I never carry my passport with me for routine travel. Only if going to the bank, or to phone company, or to a Thai government office, do I bring my passport.

The remainder of the time I carry my Thailand 'pink ID' and a copy on my mobile phone of (1) my passport (2) my visa in my passport, and (3) my latest permission to stay stamp in my passport.

Well that's good news.

Bit off topic but amazes me that some countries eg Canada, USA etc require the current passport to be sent with the application.

When I renewed my Oz pp it was done online also with post to embassy in Bangkok.

The new pp is posted to your Thai address.

You keep existing pp.

Sorry mate - that really sucks. Hope all works out for you. Dealing with any bureaucracy is never any fun. Dealing with two? Egads!

Renewing a Canadian passport in Thailand involves submitting an application by mail or in person to the Embassy of Canada in Bangkok. The process typically requires form PPTC 054 (or PPTC 482), new passport photos, your current passport, fees, and processing takes roughly 20 business days plus mailing time.

Procedure for Renewing Canadian Passport in Thailand:

Determine Eligibility: You must have been 16+ when your last passport was issued, and it cannot be damaged, lost, or stolen.

Complete Application: Use the "Renew a Passport by Mail" form (PPTC 054 or PPTC 482) available on the Government of Canada website.

Gather Documents:

Your most recent, valid Canadian passport.

Two identical passport photos (with the name/address of the photographer on the back of one, and the guarantor’s signature on the other).

Proof of parentage (if applying for a child).

Guarantor: You need a guarantor who is a Canadian citizen, 18+, holding a valid Canadian passport, and who has known you for at least 2 years.

Payment: Pay fees online or by credit card form.

Submission: Submit the application by mail or in-person at the Embassy of Canada in Bangkok.

Timeline: Expect a 20-business-day processing time, excluding mail, with potential delays.

In short, at least 1 month, then.

Will your current permission to stay be expiring within this processing period?

OP stated earlier.....

"there are 3 weeks to go to the annual retirement extension deadline."

So yet another thread where due to no fault of OP he will be lucky to have have new pp back by mid Feb when extension expires.

Having started renewal process Dec 5

Lesson: as soon as pp has 6 months remaining Renew it.
