Police in Nong Khai, Thailand, have uncovered a sophisticated SIM box operation hidden in the ceiling of a hotel room, sparking concerns over evolving scam tactics. The discovery followed a landlord's tip-off after a woman insisted on renting the same room, raising suspicions. Authorities found equipment linked to a scam network used for transmitting signals overseas, aiding fraud schemes.

The situation began when a Thai woman and a man rented Room 8 on January 9, staying overnight for 400 baht before checking out. The landlord found it odd when the same woman attempted to rent the room again, despite other rooms being available. Upon inspection, he discovered wires poking from the ceiling and alerted the police.

The search revealed three SIM boxes, two wireless internet routers, and power supplies concealed in the ceiling, confirming its use for scam operations. Pol Lt Col Apichart Koltha from the Nong Khai immigration office emphasized the need for vigilance among property owners, as scam methods continue to evolve.

Authorities are now seeking the man and woman from the previous rental to assist with further inquiries. This case highlights the challenges in combating international fraud networks and the importance of staying alert to suspicious activities, reported Bangkok Post.
