In Japan they use almost exclusively public transport and taxis, and 100% of taxis use the meter - scams are not a concern. A typical Japanese person wouldn't even think to use a ride-hailing app. The

Yep - in area's where scam's are more common... i.e. taking a taxi from MBK... or Nana Area etc

I turn it around and ask...

After they say "Mai-aw"... I say... (in Thai)... 500 baht ok ??... watch the eyes light up, then when they say ok.. I turn back and say "Mai-aw"... !!!

The tell is very clear though - IF the taxi stops and opens the window - its for a negotiation and a sure tell that they will not use the meter.

If the taxi pulls up, doesn't open the window thats more normal behavior...

I enjoy calling them out. Seeing the stupid look on their face when I speak thai with them. Then of course they get angry with me. Classic. Ummm bud you were just trying to scam me.

Losers.

Never mind, this is just a snowflake with victim culture, who deprived himself of spending time in one of my favorite cities on the planet because of one very minor negative incident. Imagine how this weakling would do if faced with a real tragedy?

Exactly, never had a problem myself in Bangkok. Pattaya and Phuket is expensive.

The Japanese man didn’t mention where and when he went. I’ve paid 1000 baht and find that very cheap. Maybe he took the limousine company inside, that’s 2000Baht.

Hardly 'far' more expensive - its not as if they are 2000 baht...

AOT Limo's (Camry) are about 900 baht into BKK... Wife uses them, so she doesn't have to deal with the Scummy Taxi drivers...

GRAB is not so convenient from the Airport - have to wait outside etc for the car to drive around to you...

After a long trip when tired etc - 900 baht for a well organised AOT service isn't exactly a lot of money.

Wife also gets 2x journeys per year (Airport to home) included in her credit card.

I always use a private firm every time I pass through Suvranabhumi, exactly for the reasons you describe.

I get a fully insured, newish SUV, no questions about how many bags I have or asking if I want tollways, all included for 800/900 baht, and it's a pleasure.

I prefer the MRT/BTS over taxis for this reason.

Not practical when you have two large suitcases and hand baggage!

If you cannot afford to be in Thailand then stay home.

Som nam naaaaa

Inappropriate use of the term Som Nam Naa. It doesn't apply at all in these situations.

And secondly, it's not about people being able to afford to be in Thailand; it's about people getting ripped off by con artists and shysters.

I think the Japanese tourist probably couldn't cope with the chaos and mayhem we all love about Bangkok, given Japan's orderly nature.

He was probably out of his comfort zone, which is why he returned quickly to his home country.

The MRT / BTS is excellent if your origin and destination are both right next to a station.

If not, then you need a taxi or moto-taxi too and from the station.

Tried the Airport link with heavy luggage ?

Ultimately - the best way in from the airport (with luggage) remains by car - and for most people that means taxi, unless you are willing to do the Rail-link with luggage, walk, change to BTS, then taxi or walk to destination - its just not worth it.

You must have been in Japan a while ago. I was in Tokyo this last year, an there are many ride-hailing apps like Uber and Lyft that I used on a daily basis when I was there with no problems. It didn't appear to me that only foreigners were using the service.

That was a decade ago, but now too Uber is a small niche in Japan and used very little by Japanese people. Grab is even smaller.
