Police in Pai district, Mae Hong Son province, are cracking down on public smoking of cannabis and cigarettes, particularly on the bustling Pai walking street. On January 22, 2026, at 19:00, local authorities, in collaboration with public health and tourist police, reinforced a strict ban on such activities in public areas. During the enforcement operation, seven violations were identified, leading to legal action against one individual for smoking cannabis and six for smoking cigarettes.

This crackdown follows rising concerns over the public nuisance caused by the odors, which have affected residents and tourists with sensitivities. Pai's popular walking street, frequented by tourists, hosts numerous cannabis shops. While smoking is allowed only in designated areas within licensed venues, visitors, notably foreign tourists, have been caught smoking on the streets. Police are working to balance tourist enjoyment with community well-being.

Authorities have updated shop operators on legal obligations concerning cannabis-infused products like gummies and cookies. They emphasized the importance of preventing customers from smoking inside establishments or in public. Compliance with regulations is now a key focus, especially during the vibrant tourism season, to maintain order and address public health concerns, reported Khaosod.

Key Takeaways

  • Police targeted public smoking violations in Pai, enforcing a strict ban.

  • Enforcement is crucial as rising odors affect sensitive individuals.

  • Ongoing patrols and compliance checks aim to maintain public order.

Any signs to say can't smoke in public (even cigs) unless at designated places with directions, arrows? because I bet most people didn't know that law / rule unless told

How many times have you been there? How do you know? The police will put up signs as needed. Meanwhile the laws have always been clear. Including cigarette smoke. Just because people get away with violating laws doesn’t mean they have a blank check to do so. There are plenty of signs to see if anyone wants to pay attention. It’s about time they recognized that people have a right to breathe fresh air. Other countries strictly enforce this, it’s about time Thailand did something about these inconsiderate cigarette pigs and clueless stoners. Smoke affects everyone’s health. You are free to give yourselves cancer but not those around you. So to smokers, no reason why you can’t vape instead, if you’re THAT addicted.

I also fully support this kind of law enforcement, There is no need for any further legislation,

Over 18, not pregnant , and not in public is all that is needed , why waste time and money on the charade of prescriptions and medical supervision that everybody knows is just that , a charade

Do men get pregnant? Lucky you don't live in OZ, you can get medical weed, but if you get stopped the next day driving and get checked by a booze and drug bus, you will be walking home, no matter if medical or not.

"a right to breathe fresh air"

Nice though but ridiculous. Air is polluted by cars, motorcycles and fires.

Maybe you ought to come outside sonetimes. Sittingg in your condo 24/7 is a waste of your time. Even here in the more quieter parts of phuket we have 4 dispensaries (money laundering?) around the market. Smells like hell.

Apparently these days they do , they can also allegedly suffer from cervical cancer and experience the menopause That's what they are telling us, and to not agree is apparently "transphobic"

Rubbish, just figures pulled out of a hat, The topic is cannabis smoking, if you are paranoid about PM 2.5 then start your own thread. Personally I don't care . no PM 2.5 where I live , perhaps people should choose where they intend to live more wisely and not just pick tourist ghettos. Assimilating into society is the way forward
