A misunderstanding between a Japanese man and a flower vendor at Udon Thani's city pillar shrine on February 3 led to police intervention. The dispute arose during a merit-making ritual involving the release of birds. Authorities were called after an argument over payment and possession of the birdcage escalated.

The incident occurred when Yamaguchi, 37, sought to release 100 sparrows priced at 25 baht each from the vendor, Sirichanan, who offered a discounted total of 2,000 baht. After releasing the birds, Yamaguchi allegedly refused to return the birdcage, believing it was included in the payment. She contacted the police out of fear of potential violence.

Yamaguchi, through a translator, explained he had intended to perform the ritual before a court appearance for a theft case. Miscommunications reportedly played a significant role in the dispute, according to police. This isn't Yamaguchi's first notable incident in the area; he has been involved in prior disturbances.

Supaporn Tattumlay, secretary of the City Pillar Shrine Foundation, emphasized the need for vendors to cease selling animals for merit-making to prevent further misunderstandings. The shrine holds cultural importance and should remain conflict-free. After mediation, the vendor opted not to press charges, and Yamaguchi was allowed to keep the birdcage.

The situation was resolved peacefully, underscoring a need for improved communication and understanding between tourists and local vendors. The shrine continues to be a popular destination, highlighting the importance of maintaining harmony, reported The Thaiger.
