A 61-year-old German national was detained on February 4 for vandalizing political campaign banners in Nonthaburi, Thailand. The banners, promoting People’s Party candidate Sutat Meesiri for Constituency 6, were damaged on two consecutive days, leading to a formal complaint by the candidate. Surveillance footage helped police identify and apprehend the man.

The incidents occurred on February 1 and 2 along Khlong Thanon Road in Bang Yai district. Initially, two banners were damaged, which were repaired and reinstalled. The following day, six additional banners were torn down at the same location. The suspect, seen on CCTV, was confronted by police and admitted to tearing down the banners, mistaking them for hazardous advertisements that could fall during his morning jogs.

Sutat Meesiri was invited to the police station for a discussion with the suspect. The German man expressed regret, apologizing and offering 2,000 baht in damages. He cited a lack of awareness of Thai laws and electoral practices as the reason for his actions. In light of the apology and compensation, Sutat decided not to pursue legal proceedings, withdrawing his complaint to focus on his campaign.

Colonel Siraphop reported that there was no malicious intent but stressed the legal repercussions of damaging political materials. The police warned the foreigner against repeating such actions and emphasized their importance during election periods. With the issue resolved, Sutat continues his campaign efforts in the constituency, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • German man detained for damaging election posters in Nonthaburi.

  • He perceived the banners as hazardous, leading to a misunderstanding.

  • Compensation offered; the candidate declined to pursue legal action.

Didn't someone claim he would do similar to remove a banner that obstructs sight?

Someone did comment the other day about that yep.

He went jogging regularly, yet failed to realise that these were political election banners?

Hmm.

Er hätte zu Specsavers joggen sollen!

I assume that the idiot is a supporter of the right-wing AfD party. This is their method of harming parties they dislike. Throw him out.

May I say WTH?

Must be the ultimate grumpy old man.

Crazy in so many ways.

Dangerous banners?

This is German vandalism week.

What was he thinking? He was out jogging so he was probably not drunk which would have been an excuse. Doing it twice, didn't know about election?? What a stupid moron.

I thought he was gonna have to prepare for the wurst…

Did he draw a Hitler moustache on the candidates pic? 😅😅

Plonker!

Now if he'd filled up the speakers on those ruddy election trucks with spray-foam ...

Thank <insert deity of your choice> Saturday is the last day of campaigning!

Our building contractor has a side job taking down election posters so I doubt any roof work will be happening on Monday.

It is usualy the other way round. Supporter of the left and green party's are the ones often damaging election posters of right-wing parties or even attack right-wing politicians.

Damaging election posters isn't legal anywhere, but happens everywhere elections are held. Dude got lucky that he hasn't been deported. He might not have gotten off that easy had he torn down signs of a more right leaning party. Probably got himself flagged with a yellow card on his Thai Immigration.

In the past, I have been tempted to draw a Hitler moustache on Tony, or disfigure his likeness in some other way, but, unlike the German, didn't have the guts to go through with it.

Fortunately that piece of s.. t is not displayed anymore, although I am sure he is still running the show through his nephew.

This is nothing to do with politics , the signs were causing an obstruction and blocking his way

I saw one of those signs blown by the wind and landing on the road, very nearly causing an accident to a motorbike. Many of them are not properly fixed.

Must be a voter for one of the left or green partys. They like to do that in Germany. Old Habits die hard.

What a moron and just asking for it... duh! What was he hoping to achieve other than get plod's attention? Retards on the loose everywhere these days.

Trump isn't stumping here. Frankly, the repetitive election posters, designed to be visible and attractive to people in cars, are a regular eyesore and an obstruction tio civilised pedestrians. Surely there's some better way to let voters know whose running and what they stand for.

Maybe he should consider jogging in the street where there are NO political advertisements.

One wonders whether the collectivism and chaos of Thailand is something that, long term, this German from his rules-based and individualistic society is going to cope with.
