A Russian tourist has been found dead on a beach below a popular viewpoint on Koh Samui in Surat Thani province, with Thai police saying the incident is believed to have been an accident. The body was discovered on February 5 after another foreign tourist came across the remains and alerted authorities. Officers say there were no immediate signs of foul play, theft, or physical struggle at the scene.

Police from Koh Samui Police Station attended the location alongside rescue workers from the Kusol Songkro Koh Samui Foundation and medical staff from Koh Samui Hospital. The beach lies beneath Na Phralan Viewpoint, an area known for its steep and rocky terrain. Recovery of the body proved difficult, as rescue teams had to climb to the viewpoint and then carefully descend a narrow, hazardous path to reach the shoreline.

Medical staff reported that the man was found lying face up with severe injuries to his head and the back of his neck. His skull was shattered, and fragments of brain matter were discovered near the body. Officers also noted that the man was tightly gripping a tree branch, which they believe he may have tried to use to stop himself during the fall.

A red bag recovered near the body contained two passports and a key to his hotel. Using the documents, police identified the deceased as 36-year-old Russian national Iliar Bichurin. At the time of his death, he was wearing black shorts, a long-sleeved black shirt, and trainers.

According to police, there were no signs of theft or evidence suggesting the involvement of other individuals. Investigators believe Bichurin may have fallen from the viewpoint while attempting to climb down towards the beach below. Police suspect he tried to hold onto a tree branch during the fall, but the branch was unable to support his weight and broke.

Information reported by MGR Online states that Bichurin entered Thailand via the Kuan Dode Immigration Checkpoint in Satun province. He later checked into a hotel in the Mae Nam district of Koh Samui, where he had been staying prior to the incident. No further details about his travel companions or activities before the fall have been released.

The body has been transferred to Koh Samui Hospital for a detailed autopsy to officially confirm the cause of death. Police said they will coordinate with the Embassy of Russia in Thailand to notify the man’s family and arrange the necessary procedures following the investigation.

OMG, what a terrible accident. RIP young man. Condolences to the parents and his family.

I agree totally- and for once it appears the death may actually have been an accident with no suspicious "undertones" to it

RIP to the young man

Very sad

Terrible ending to a vacation in paradise. Personally I would not call that a beach. RIP and prayers.

Maybe time to upgrade this viewpoint for safety features to prevent this kind of accident to happen again?
