A dome structure at the Metropolitan Electricity Authority's training centre in Samut Prakan collapsed at 11:30 am on February 9. Rescue workers and volunteers are assessing damage at the MEA’s Mueang Mai Bang Phli housing complex. The number of possible injuries is still unclear, and efforts are underway to determine if individuals are trapped under the debris.

Officials have restricted access to the area due to concerns about the remaining structure's stability, which poses a risk of additional collapse. The precise cause of the collapse is not yet identified. Engineers and relevant agencies are planning a thorough investigation to understand the structural failure.

The incident has prompted a cautious approach by emergency teams as they navigate the unstable environment. Public safety measures are being prioritized while ensuring that unauthorized personnel do not enter the potentially hazardous zone.

Looking forward, investigations led by engineers and safety experts will aim to uncover the factors that contributed to this unexpected failure. More details will emerge as crews thoroughly examine the site and gather data over the coming days, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • A dome at MEA's training centre collapsed; injury details are pending.

  • Officials have secured the site due to structural instability.

  • Ongoing investigations aim to uncover the cause of the collapse.

Engineering Expert Calls for Investigation After Steel Dome Collapse

A structural engineering expert has urged a comprehensive investigation following the collapse of a large steel dome at a Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) training center in Bang Phli, Samut Prakan. The incident, which happened at approximately 11.30 am on February 9, resulted in injuries to four individuals. The dome's failure involved steel columns snapping at their base, causing significant structural components like steel trusses and H-beams to plummet to the ground.

Professor Dr. Amorn Pimanmas, president of the Thailand Structural Engineers Association (TSEA) and an engineering lecturer at Kasetsart University, has reviewed footage and initial reports of the accident. He outlined possible factors, suggesting a thorough examination of the project’s structural elements is necessary. According to his assessment, issues could have arisen during construction, particularly from incomplete structural bracing supporting the steel frame.

Dr. Amorn proposed three potential scenarios for investigators to consider. The failure might have stemmed from weak joints at the base of the steel columns, potentially compromising the entire structure. Alternatively, the collapse could indicate an overall lack of stability along the structure’s longitudinal or transverse axes, where insufficient bracing might have been a contributing factor. He emphasized the need to examine various elements like the foundation's dimensions and load-bearing capacity.

Given the dome is classified as a regulated structure, legal compliance demands design and supervision by a licensed engineer. The TSEA plans to conduct an independent assessment to identify precise failures and enhance understanding of what transpired. Dr. Amorn stressed the importance of scrutinizing construction plans, engineering calculations, and execution records to uncover the accident’s root cause, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • A detailed investigation is requested following the MEA dome collapse.

  • Possible causes include construction phase errors and weak structural joints.

  • The TSEA will conduct an independent site evaluation to determine failures.

Let me stress to not rule out corruption as a potential root cause.

From the picture it appears to be arch shaped and not dome shaped.

Loads of engineers recently arrived in the UK, sure they would be glad of the work

Not a dome then.

Didn't I see a crane collapse one or two days ago?

What do you think? Dodgy design, dodgy steel or both?

Another case of Chinese TOFU steel by the looks of it. Inferior steel but while there is no proper testing or complience there will be more cases like this.
