QR Codes Debut for Taxis: Track, Report & Estimate Fares

  • Popular Post

Passengers in Thailand can now utilize QR codes for enhanced taxi ride safety and convenience. This new feature allows users to verify driver details, real-time track their journey, share trip information, and rate their experience. The Department of Land Transport plans to equip around 70,000 taxis with these QR codes by June 2026.

Previously, passengers had limited means to verify driver identity or report issues. The new system aims to address these concerns with three QR code variants: purple for driver verification, blue for fare estimation and feedback, and red for urgent complaints. The codes are linked to government systems, promising quick resolution of reported issues.

Experts suggest this advancement is a step forward in transportation safety and transparency. By linking the QR codes with driver and vehicle data, including service history and ratings, the system provides a comprehensive check for passengers. This technology is expected to significantly reduce risks of driver impersonation and disputes over fares or service conduct.

Looking ahead, the Department plans to complete the rollout by mid-2026, covering all taxis in service. As the system develops, additional features may be integrated, further enhancing passenger security and satisfaction. The initiative is a response to growing expectations for accountability and safety in urban transport systems, reported The Nation.

Key Takeaways

  • QR codes allow real-time tracking and driver verification for taxi passengers.

  • The system links with government databases for efficient handling of complaints.

  • Rollout aims to cover 70,000 taxis by June 2026.

Get ready for the fake QR code scams.

Scan here first. No problem. Same same.

Every driver will have a sharpie and make a single dot somewhere on the QR code to make it invalid. The DLT just needs to make a proper bilingual reporting app that WORKS for people to use. They have only tried about six different apps, all of them garbage.

Ok, perhaps it's good ..

when I want to pay for my taxi ride, older drivers refuse to accept QR payment or payment through promptpay, they only want cash - no tracks of income 🥴

It's crazy to have 3 different QR codes for each action. Why not 1 QR code for that Taxi and then 3 options to chose from. This is so inefficient. Open to cheating, mark my words!

Just look at other countries to see how to manage this. Dubai has a great system. Why not copy from the best?

Oh no, Thailand is not same, needs their own invention. That's why Thailand is not moving forward. And China has become the second economy in the world. They just copied from the best.

"they only want cash - no tracks of income"

Why would a taxi drivers income record be any concern of yours (or anyone else's) apart from that driver and the Revenue Department?

Is cash not the most common way of paying taxi drivers in Bangkok...what's the issue about it?

What is the cheating method that you, apparently so clearly, see?

So what, exactly, is so bad about this proposed system of which you seem to have advanced knowledge?

How can you be so sure the Thailand's proposed system will not be better than Dubai's?

The QR code will be displayed on one of those perspex mounts, stuck to the dashboard with a length of double sided foam tape. The whole ensemble will be shrouded with a piece cut from an old towel, because "not work".

Because Thai taxi drivers are known to make sure that things only Work if they want it to work.

Just look at the Taxi Tripmeter the Law says Must use the meter right .

Taxi drivers say ,don't work /not using/ modified meter.

One can't win from the Taxi Mafia Too many contacts high up in the system.

I don't want to use cash, especially not when there is an excellent system to pay with QR code

Not going to help. Nothing will. Had a Bolt driver respond “I will kill you”, when I told him I was going to report him for switching vehicles as his vehicle did not match the app registered vehicle. So QR codes will mean nothing in the land of the ignorant and extremely volatile thieves

They should start at Suvarnabhumi airport. The last two times I ws there I took the ticker for the "official taxi" downstairs at lower lever. When entering the taxi the scams already start. "700 to center ok?". I said no I want the meter both times and both times the driver was fuming mad. Mind you, this is the official taxi at the airport. If they cannot control these taxi drivers, any other attempt to futile.

I had exactly the same experience earlier this year

The reality is that any system will have flaws and loopholes that will quickly be exploited

A nice idea in theory- but as we all know TIT!

I wonder if this will help prevent taxis rom refusing to pick up foreigners at nighttime along Sukumvit, for rides using the meter? They continue to quote 150 or 200 baht for 2 or 3 km rides rather than using their meter. Sometimes I might have to stop seven taxis before one's willing to use their meter.

Many official taxis even hide the id card that is supposed to be clearly visible.

Assuming that the foreigner can reach somebody on the hotline to complain, what next ? Usually they cannot speak english. And when they do, it will be the usual "no problem", or the usual "sorry" but nothing will change.

Had an issue with a rude fellow behind his counter at a bank in a large Hua Hin shopping mall.

On each visit the chap was rude, made it a point to say "no can" "no no" on anything very simple that was requested. Nothing ever changed despite pointing out his behaviour to the manager. I did what any sensible foreigner would do. Plainly come over one day and closed the account and went to the next bank on the same floor where it service was great and no hassles when you would go and plainly ask for some change to smaller currency bills. It is such type of attitudes that give a very bad image.

Or use GrabCar/Bike app. Pay using bank apps, credit card, no cash involve.
