Indonesia Prepares 8,000 Troops for Gaza Deployment

Featured Replies

Indonesia leads international effort to stabilize Gaza.

Indonesia is gearing up to deploy up to 8,000 soldiers to Gaza as part of the second phase of a US-brokered ceasefire agreement. This marks Indonesia as the first country to commit troops to the International Stabilization Force (ISF).

General Maruli Simanjuntak, the army chief of staff, announced that training is underway, focusing on medical and engineering roles. This initiative is mandated by the UN Security Council to secure borders and demilitarize the area, including the disarmament of Hamas.

Indonesia's move follows its commitment to President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace, which aims to oversee post-war reconstruction and a new Palestinian government in Gaza. The board will meet for the first time in Washington on 19 February.

President Prabowo Subianto's decision has sparked criticism from some Islamic groups in Indonesia, amidst public backlash over US involvement in Gaza’s conflict. However, Prabowo stands firm, emphasizing Indonesia’s role as the world’s largest Muslim nation in pursuing a two-state solution.

Israel’s public broadcaster reported that an area between Rafah and Khan Younis in Gaza has been designated for an Indonesian military base. Although Turkey and Pakistan are considering similar moves, they have stressed their deployments would be strictly for peacekeeping, not disarming Hamas.

Despite these efforts, tensions remain high as Hamas refuses to disarm while Israel occupies parts of Gaza. This complicates the mission, as the situation on the ground is far from a stable peace.

Key Takeaways:

  • Indonesia to deploy troops under a US-brokered ceasefire agreement.

  • Tasks include securing borders and post-war reconstruction.

  • Regional tensions persist, impacting peacekeeping efforts.

How many proxies is that three or four?

'Board of Peace' indicates Indonesia paid Trump a billion bucks. Will they be peacekeepers? Will Israel allow visas to this many foreign Muslims? Will they stop the IDF shooting Palestinians indiscriminately every day?

Where did you hear that Indonesia paid $1bn? That is not required for a limited time membership on the Board. Israel for now controls the access from Egypt, but does not issue visas for entering Gaza. Collaborating with Israel would be politically dangerous for the Indonesian president, thus the stated aims are to be medical and reconstruction aid.

It's unclear to me that Israel can dictate where the Indonesians locate themselves in the zone not occupied by Israel.

No countries even those who have pledged have paid. Trump as usual lied that "some' countries have paid. There are no official or journalistic source collaborating this. This board will slowly but surely fade into oblivion and Trump will hope no one will bring this up as it is just so embarrassing.

Nevertheless, Gaza is Israel, so Israelis believe. Foreigners need visas. There is indeed a very visible presence and occupation by IDF remaining in Gaza.

Seriously, Israel controls the Egyptian border crossing? Why would Egypt buy that?

I wasn't aware Trump's $1B price did not include first signers.

I hope that the Board of Peace vanishes, but that may depend on whether UAE puts up real money along with some Zionist "investors" to make the Trump Riviera unstoppable, at least until January 2029. By then all the remaining structures may have been bulldozed over the remains of 10000++ Gazans. Then there would be much less to investigate.

Those countries that he invited do not have to pay in the initial period.

In the past, Egypt cooperated with Israel in controlling Rafah traffic. Hamas was not favored by the Egyptian military even when the Muslim Brotherhood government was in power (after Mubarak).

I would suspect Muslim Indonesians would be sympathetic to their Palestinian brothers.
