Thailand 3rd Globally in Taxi Scam Complaints, Survey Reveals

Featured Replies

I note only one complaint about London taxis. Yeah, yeah I know the topic is Thailand taxis but London cabs are the most expensive that I know.

A trip from Heathrow to West End of London, a journey of 15 miles costs just shy of £100. A London cab from Leicester Square to Kings Cross station, a journey of less than 2 miles, costs £20.

By contrast, Bangkok cabs are the cheapest I’ve experienced in a lifetime of traveling. The drivers deserve a rise in the meter fare.

I’ve seen the recent survey about Thailand ranking high in global taxi scam complaints, but I have to say my own experience has been quite different. Most of the taxi drivers I’ve encountered over the

  • As someone who divides his time amongst Australia, Europe and Thailand, I can definitely state that Thai taxis are crazily cheap compared with taxis in Australia and Europe.

  • Disappointing.. Thailand always want to be at the first place

The only issues I have with the taxis here, are in certain areas like Sukumvit, where at night time a lot of guys refuse to use their meters, so sometimes I have to stop five or six taxis before I find one who's willing to use his meter, or we simply negotiate what I feel is a fair price. Other than that I find the guys to be pretty reasonable often friendly and decent chaps. It's a really tough job driving around in Bangkok traffic all day, and it's something I don't think I would do for any amount of money.

I think thats a very fair comment and outlook... For the most part, taxi's are honest and decent.

The issue of course is that the areas most tourists go to also attract the 'negative' kind of taxi driver.

Then there are the issues highlighed above. Thailand also might rank high in 'scam list' due to the higher numbers of tourists.

Fair comment really. I am sure we can all add anecdotes of bad experiences we have had.

had one nightmare journey on a tuk tuk. He got lost several times- even though it was to a well known theatre in the centre of Bkk

At the end he wanted 2000 - I told him very firmly I would pay 200 and that he was lucky to get that

Crazy really but then TIT

That's one thing in which I find Thailand lacking. Not only will cab drivers refuse to use meters, but they will scare away app drivers from certain pick up points. I no longer take buses from Suvarnabumi or Ekamai to Pattaya because when the bus drops me off at the Northern Pattaya bus station, no Bolt driver dares come and pick me up there because of the taxi/songthaew mafia.

Traffic is worse in Jakarta than in Bangkok of course, but taxis in Jakarta do not scam, and apps work well with credit cards.

Ueber in Brazil is super efficient and cheap, with rides booked from the credit card.

Left Thailand 2 days ago. Very, very sick of the taxi scams and 1000 other scams. Recent 3 weeks in Thailand got scammed 4 times. Latest 3 days ago: Hotel I was staying at: "No. you can't get your deposit of 10.000 Baht, cause you are checking out earlier than you signed for".

Not coming back to Thailand ever. Had enough.

That is inherent to the people, you cannot do business with them, I speak from experience.

Dude I rolled off a plane late after sitting for 6 hours in Batumi and all I wanted was to hit my layover hotel 11km from the airport.

Friggin Yellow taxi guy told me I ruined his night because I wasnt going downtown, then proceeded to drive like a lunatic. And it still cost almost $18

That taught me a valuable lesson.

You must be the only foreigner in Thailand that gets Thai price for taxi, hospitals/doctors, house/condo, construction projects, green fees, hotel rates and much more. Pro-tip: If you have a Thai friend or you have a Thai,-wife: Compare your SIM-cards and what you are paying for data and data speeds.

I reckon Thailand must be ranked 1st Globally for the cheapest fares.

Maybe increase the fares, we'd see a reduction in taxi scams

I only use to use metered taxis, wife books hotels, negotiated building contracts, and I get Thai price, or I don't use.

Not saying people haven't tried to overcharge me, I simply don't use them.
