A bun rieu eatery on Hang Luoc Street, Hanoi, has been temporarily closed following a Chinese tourist's social media criticism about its poor hygiene. The tourist, identified as Mr. Wang, posted photos on Xiaohongshu showing a trash-filled serving area and a wet floor, labeling the conditions as "unhygienic." His post quickly circulated among Chinese netizens, raising concerns about cleanliness in Vietnamese street food venues.

Mr. Wang's comments highlighted his difficulty in finding clean dining options in Vietnam, sparking immediate reactions both in China and Vietnam. His experiences resonated especially with those who have previously visited Hanoi and encountered similar hygiene issues, such as uncovered ingredients at food stalls. The viral post ignited discussions on Vietnamese social media regarding the ongoing challenges of maintaining food hygiene in popular street food areas.

Following the uproar, Hoan Kiem Ward People's Committee officials inspected the eatery on March 5. They documented several violations, including exposed food, pests in the food prep area, and staff not using gloves or masks. As a consequence, the restaurant received a fine of VND4.5 million (US$180). The owner has since committed to adhering to hygiene regulations and intends to reopen the eatery only after addressing the safety issues.

The restaurant, known for its bun rieu priced at VND60,000-75,000, was a favorite among locals and tourists, often featured on food review channels. Despite its temporary closure, the eatery's popularity indicates a potential swift recovery once compliance is achieved, reported VN Express.

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

Why is it that we always want to find fault with some other? Is it due to our "superiority" or "class", whatever that is.

I agree with your comment, but that eatery looks poor in hygiene, and maybe the complaint was indeed justified.

The eatery is filthy; that goes without saying.

Absolutely. The Chinese tourist, Mr. Wang did the right thing, by exposing it. Just thinking where the pot & kettle got involved in it 🤔

That comment brings to mind the horror story of entrepreneurial Chinese dredging cooking oil out of a drain and "recycling" it into their cuisine. A couple of years ago. Cue the meme: "They'll eat anything with four legs except the table ... anything that flies except airplanes ... anything under the seas except for submarines..."
