America Needs More Wars: Hegseth Has a New One On Offer

Dismay as Hegseth urges Latin American allies to join ‘offense’ against cartels

In his speech, Hegseth said that “for too long, leaders in Washington abandoned the simple wisdom of the Monroe doctrine”, referring to the “America for Americans” foreign policy set out in 1823 by the US president James Monroe and later invoked to justify US-backed military coups in Latin America.

The defence secretary urged countries to remain “Christian nations, under God, proud of our shared heritage with strong borders” and not be led astray by “radical narco-communism, anarcho-tyranny … and uncontrolled mass migration”.

Invoking the Monroe Doctrine in front of the leaders our America's neighbors to the south? The guy really knows how to read the room.

What makes this even funnier is that right wingers now invoke America's shared heritage with Europe to justify why Europeans should be preferred as candidates for naturalization. Apparently Hegseth takes a more inclusive view. Good for you, Pete!

No harm in wanting to wipe out the drug cartels, is there ? But with all the corruption in the Americas, be it north or south, it could be a Heculean task.

The cartels significantly destabilize South America, and action is necessary. I don’t know the solution, but your knee jerk reaction is foolish.

The solution is obvious but still politically unpalatable. Actually, I think the knee-jerk reaction here is yours. Tell me why is my reaction knee-jerk? You approve of Hegseth's approach?

How is that going to work? They're not an army. They're widely distributed. There is a huge and inelastic demand for their product. In the past cartels have been destroyed. As observers have pointed out, when the original cartels were destroyed multiple cartels popped up out of the ruins of the old ones and generated even more instability.

Could be. But most will do what they are told to do

The cartels have become highly militarized and pose a significant problem for countries in Central and South America. The left's response is often to deny the issue and ignore the reality. This mentality resembles European thinking.

I remember when that was said about the EU vs Trump in the little matter of Greenland. How did that turn out?

a few years to go, have to take care of some immediate issues.

But looking at Starmers reaction, isnt much Britain can do. 4 planes and a ship led by a marshmallow leftist. The germans will do what they are told. It will get done.

Good luck in using force against a market where the demand is so strong and the profits so high. It takes the mentality of a Marxist to believe that might work.

Nothing more lame than using a prediction as some sort of argument. What we do know, because it happened in a thing called The Past, is that Trump backed down.

America Needs More Wars: Hegseth Has a New One On Offer

Absolutely - It keeps the money rolling into the coffers of the war industry who then push it under the table to government officials to keep the wars going.
As General Smedley Butler so aptly stated: "War's a racket."

None of these people's kids are going to join the military. Military service is for the commoners. Even War-Monger Extraordinaire, Pete Hegseth's kids - none of them in the military.

There are plenty, and I mean PLENTY of valid reasons to criticize Hegseth. Criticizing him for the fact that none of his children serve in the military is ridiculous

Backed down from what? Greenland can wait, we have some lessons to mete out first. Nothing better to sharpen the spear than hunting down some more narco terrorists. Smart countries will view it as a training excersize for their operators.

Backed down from what? Really?

President Donald Trump on Wednesday scrapped the tariffs that he threatened to impose on eight European nations to press for U.S. control over Greenland, pulling a dramatic reversal shortly after insisting he wanted to get the island “including right, title and ownership.”

In a post on his social media site, Trump said he had agreed with the head of NATO on a “framework of a future deal” on Arctic security, potentially defusing tension that had far-reaching geopolitical implications.

He said “additional discussions” on Greenland were being held concerning the Golden Dome missile defense program, a multilayered, $175 billion system that for the first time will put U.S. weapons in space.

Deflecting much?

The fact is Trump threatened 8 European nations with punitive tariffs over Greenland and backed down. And what did he get in return? A promise of future discussions. That's diplomat speech for Bubkis.

As usual, making it personal. You have no factual response to the fact the Trump made a threat and then retracted it. And to date, he has nothing to show for it except a vague promise.

Sec. of WAR Hegseth reminds me of (the fictional) Joe Isuzu and not just for looks:

The drug cartels, and the associated trade, violence and terrorism exist because the USA provides a large market for drugs. I do not know how to curb that market, but unless greater minds than mine make considerable steps to get it under control then they will flourish.

One thing is for certain, unless that is done then they will continue to flourish.

The drunken fool Hegseth's all American delight in bombing the living daylights out of your southern neighbours certainly won't do it.

Maybe a start would not be issuing Presidential Pardons to the wealthiest (although I'm sure that his billions of $ had nothing to do with it!) drug lords you manage to convict?

Incidentally, is this all leading up to the big "Shield of The Americas" announcement we are led to expect today, possibly featuring, one hears, Kristi Noem dressed as a Mexican Hat Dancer, with Corey Lewandowski leaning against a wall in poncho and sombrero?

Tacos all round!

Let's be honest and call Trump and Hegseth's belief system what it really is, because Christianity as espoused by the guy who gave it its name it is not:

KKKristianity and KKKristian Nationalism. Righty Whities.

They "love" Jesus, but hate what he actually preached. I bet these "believers" would like to ban Matthew 25 from churches, because it is an inconvenient truth.

There is a cold-hearted school of thought that offers an alternative to military action against the drug cartels; it's called legalization. If drugs were legal, the cartels would have no business, or perhaps play the kind of role Monsanto plays in the food industry. Trump loves Monsanto, so he'd likely love Cocaine 'r Nosotros.

Yes, Darwin Awards would have to be handed out to those who think, "I'm going to go try me some of that cocaine or heroin or fentanyl". It would still fit into Edwin Starr's song "WAR!"

"it ain't nothing but a heartbreak...good only for the undertaker"

But rather than spend the $1 trillion (2.6% of total US National Debt) the US has spent in the War on Drugs since 1971, money might be spent on care for the addicted and education of potential users.

I remember a poster who used to have a handle here with 88 in it. They claimed it was bla bla but we all know what was really meant by it.

I wonder what happened to that poster. Hope they are doing OK.

By far the most realistic thing you have ever said on here.

Bravo.

Grow up, child. Not everyone is as up to speed on what you and the fat old guy in Cambodia who buys young girls for sex (by his own admission) think "88" means. Some people just played university football and remember it fondly. Iguess neither you nor the fat guy ever played sports, which comes as no surprise.

Can we assume by your handle that you are a arsonist?

Woah easy there. Back to your old name calling and slandering I see.

I never played sports.....what a laugh. Go back to your huddle.

Blue 88 blue 88.... hut hut.

You can assume whatever it is makes you feel better about yourself. Smh. What a weak attempt at putting someone down.

The psycho drunk Fake Christian uses the term "shared heritage", which is clearly a euphemism for "white skin".

The drunk also seems not to have read the 1st Amendment.

I understand that Portugal has done something along those lines. It has I believe reduced dramatically much of the criminal activity associated with addiction, which was, when I knew the place, rather a problem. Perhaps a practical, if not particularly "kinetic" solution?

I used to know Portugal well, especially the Opporto area. Always struck me that the people were quite sensible, and that it was the sort of place that would be nice when it was finished! A glass of chilled white port over ice was the drink of the Gods!

He is already doing something in Ecuador , soldiers on the ground there,

anything to distract from the Trump-Epstein files tm.

America for the Americans. All the while putting a fence up on the southern border of the US.

Or while invading to take their oil.
