The Department of Education (DepEd) has implemented a four-day onsite workweek for its non-teaching personnel starting Monday, March 9. Fridays will now serve as a common work-from-home day, following Education Secretary Sonny Angara's recent memorandum. This decision aligns with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s directive for government offices to conserve energy due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

This policy affects non-teaching and related-teaching staff, including contract-of-service and job order employees. Teachers will maintain their normal class schedules to ensure classes and end-of-school-year activities continue without disruption. The directive is effective immediately and will stay in place until further notice from the Office of the President.

DepEd's move includes additional energy-saving protocols aimed at reducing electricity and fuel use by 10% to 20%. Offices are instructed to keep air conditioners at 24 degrees Celsius and employ sleep settings on office equipment. Non-essential lights and electronics should be switched off during lunch breaks and after hours. The use of stairs instead of elevators is also encouraged for short-distance floor movements.

Online meetings have been emphasized, with physical meetings only allowed when absolutely necessary. Official travel is now limited to essential activities that cannot be conducted virtually. This follows Malacañang's memorandum circular No. 114, dated March 6, urging government offices to enforce strict energy-saving practices due to soaring global fuel prices. Executive Secretary Ralph Recto highlighted the volatility in energy markets prompted by Middle Eastern conflicts in this directive.

Looking forward, DepEd will continue monitoring the situation and adjust its policies as necessary. The initiative is part of broader measures by the government to manage energy resources efficiently during a period of uncertainty in global energy supplies, reported Philstar.
