The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has issued a warning to public vehicle drivers against exploiting local and foreign passengers in light of rising fuel prices triggered by ongoing conflict in the Middle East. This follows reports of a Taiwanese passenger being charged ₱9,600 by a taxi driver from Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) to Manila, instead of the standard ₱500 fare. In response, the DOTr has directed the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) and the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to crack down on drivers engaging in fraudulent practices.

The incident reported involved a significant overcharge that went viral in Taiwan, sparking public outcry and prompting swift action from transportation authorities. This situation arises amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, impacting global oil prices and putting financial pressure on transportation sectors worldwide. The DOTr's proactive measures aim to maintain fair practices amidst these challenges.

Regulatory bodies have been tasked with enforcing strict actions, including suspension or cancellation of franchises and criminal charges against offending drivers. The initiative is intended to protect passengers and uphold the integrity of the public transportation system. Transport operators face severe consequences if found guilty of allowing or engaging in these exploitative practices.

Looking ahead, the DOTr is likely to increase monitoring and enforcement activities to prevent further incidents. Authorities are working on long-term strategies to cope with the economic impacts of fluctuating fuel prices, while ensuring passenger rights and safety are not compromised. The situation remains closely monitored by government agencies to mitigate future disruptions, reported Balita.
