Vietnam's Phu Quoc International Airport is undergoing a VND22 trillion ($836 million) expansion, progressing ahead of schedule according to officials. The project aims to equip the airport to host the APEC 2027 summit on Phu Quoc Island, with the structural framework for the VIP terminal already completed and a new runway expected to meet its June 30 deadline.

The expansion, overseen by Sun Group subsidiary Sun Airport JSC, began in July 2025 and spans more than 1,050 hectares. This ambitious project intends to quadruple the airport's capacity to 24 million passengers annually, with future plans to accommodate up to 50 million. The ongoing work includes developing a VIP terminal for welcoming summit delegates, with the terminal's roof now 60% complete. At the T2 international terminal, basic structure completion is at 85%, and the steel roof structure started in early March.

A significant challenge is constructing Runway 2, a 3,300-meter airstrip on soft ground while keeping the current runway operational. The cement concrete base is 58% finished, and high-performance concrete is being laid. The runway is built to ICAO 4E standards to handle wide-body aircraft, featuring 78 cm thick concrete capable of supporting planes like the Boeing 747, 787, and Airbus A350.

In addition to the runway, new aircraft aprons such as 1C are progressing faster than expected, with some parts already completed. On March 21, Sun Group signed a strategic partnership with Changi Airports International, a subsidiary of Singapore's Changi Airport Group. This collaboration will ensure the airport's management meets international standards and develops both aviation and non-aviation services, reported VN Express.
